I'd get a house with a garden on the edge of town, put my desk in front of the window with the best view of the sea, and spend my days writing and daydreaming. (less)

1. Read a lot. Not just the genre you like to write, but a variety of genres. Figure out what you like (and why) and what you don't like (and why).

2. Write even when you don't want to. It's great to write when you're feeling inspired, but when you have to meet a deadline, you don't always have the luxury of waiting for inspiration to strike. If you have writer's block, shut your brain off for an hour or two, then get back to it.

3. Learn how to take criticism. A professor I admire once told me that "becoming a good writer is learning to rewrite what you've already rewritten." This is true. A manuscript goes through several rounds of revisions before it reaches publication. If you're too precious with your work, you're doing it a disservice. I love it when my editor tears my work apart! It means I have the chance to make it better.(less)

“It’s weird how something can be such a huge part of your life, and then one day, without even realizing, it becomes part of your past.”
Britnee Meiser, All My Bests

“Memory is a workable thing, kind of like art. You can mold it and shape it, build it up or beat it down. The important bits will stay the same, but the details are going to change depending on who is doing the remembering, or when, or why.”
Britnee Meiser, All My Bests

“Love makes you do embarrassing things,” Immie said. “And that’s why I don’t want any part of it.”
“I don’t think it works like that.”
In fact, I knew from experience that love wasn’t something you chose. It was something that happened to you.”
