Writers have to reveal themselves to be read. But who are you talking to online, really? Friends? Colleagues? Readers? Fans? We’ve all seen writers get stalked. Rain’s decided to probe this sensitive point by presenting their story collection in a meta-narrative: the author has been murdered, and the murderer is letting us read their work.

This killer POV framing Rain’s sixteen stories is aimed at online writers chatting in DMs. We authors share publishing news and what we ate for breakfast with each other, and with an audience. This existence of the online creative that elides the professional and personal life creates a vulnerability. If that’s too much for you, too bad: The killer POV cheerfully reassures us that the decision to murder is random, and there’s no way for one person to avoid such a fate. “The only way to make it out alive is not to have a body.” And this is how Rain presents the guts of their work. Each story is organized by body part (eyes, heart, and so on) which is where the clever collection title comes from.

The first story is presented as the Eyes. (Originally released by Tenebrous Press’ The Skull and Laurel Magazine (issue 1) under the title “The Blind Cannot Judge Me, For They Cannot See I’m Good Inside.”) The prose is absolutely melodious. Rain’s craft stands out to me as some of the best I’ve ever read. There’s a quality to it that is absolutely enviable, a beauty to the euphony of each sentence that conveys (often) disgusting, visceral scenes. This coastal weird climate dystopia wrenches the heart: “The pier is mossy wet, the morning sky the same hot pink as a plastic animal I used to treasure. The garbage patch stalks on the horizon, its hot stink warning us that its flotsam bounty is finite. Along the beach, children take sledges to beached jellyfish. After each splat, their laughs sound like paper being torn, and my ancestor’s eyes beam their pride on them.”

To write, to read, to love, to know one another: to appreciate beauty is to acknowledge, first, that which is ugly. The best horror writers embody (ahem) this in their work. For me, Rain is up there with Clive Barker: there is no other quite like them, the transcendent explored via bodily flensing.
