“This last finding is an important detail to be aware of, especially for teachers. Where exactly you put your external focus seems to matter, and that differs based on level of expertise. For instance, researchers have found that beginning golfers do best when they are told to focus on the movement of the club rather than the trajectory of the ball through the air.16 That’s a focus closer to the body. But the opposite is true for expert golfers: they do better when focused on the flight trajectory of the ball, rather than focusing on the position of the clubface in the swing.17 The same thing was found in volleyball players: those with more skill did better when their external focus was further from the body, whereas those with less skill did best with an external focus closer to the body.”
