The journey to creating Maharlika started as far back as high school for me (2006-2010), where as a film buff I dreamed of cr Obviously biased for this one, but I'll take this as an opportunity to share some perspective on the creation of this thing! The journey to creating Maharlika started as far back as high school for me (2006-2010), where as a film buff I dreamed of creating a dystopian science-fiction story featuring a group of young students caught amid a power struggle for the future of a post-apocalyptic world. I was much less driven and confident then, so I never got around to finishing the screenplay.

Fast forward to over a decade later: I moved back to the Philippines after 15 years in the US, and felt this deep pull towards the vision of a Philippines that was powerful in its own right, able to fully live up to the potential of its people. A visit to Tokyo showed me a glimmer of what an excellent Asian city could look and feel like—not just in terms of economic development and infrastructure, but in how strong their sense of cultural identity was. The things that came out of their hearts and minds were often strange but almost always brilliant—and I knew the Philippines was capable of that.

These ideas began to meld together around 2020/2021. What came out of it was this story and world that exemplified (I hope) both this entrancing promise of a Philippines as center of human society... as well the darker side of what, truly, it might look like if the Filipino people got a hold of such boundless power.

Around that, a mystery unfolded—what the hell happened, and how did we even get here? And what can the answer to that mystery tell us about what it means to be an individual speck of humanity caught in the currents of history, time, and an unfathomable universe?

I found John Ray on the Penlab Facebook group and immediately thought he would be a perfect partner. His output in Volume 1 of Maharlika is incredible, in my humble opinion, and it just keeps getting better with every chapter. On my side, I finished writing the full story, 6 volumes worth from front to back, in 2022—so for what it's worth, know that this is a story with an ending, that every major question has an answer planned ahead of time. I'm excited for you to experience it.

As for my own evaluation of this first volume, I think we did a decent job at setting up the world and the major pieces of the story while maintaining momentum through the first 5 chapters—up to the last few pages when the nature of this story really begins to reveal itself. If I could change anything, I would (and might, when time allows) revisit the first chapter and add a bit more meat in the early characterization of Mal and Yari; the hardest part, for me, was balancing this with the necessity of getting to the real start of the story, and the real-world realities of how long it takes to translate script to art, which forced us to keep the pacing lean. But overall, I'm proud of this, proud of our little team, and hopeful that you enjoy your stay in this new dreamscape we've built.
