Jan Pieter Marie Laurens de Vries was een Nederlands germanist en volkskundige.
Tussen 1926 en 1946 verbonden aan de universiteit van Leiden als hoogleraar, waar hij ontslagen werd na veroordeeld te zijn voor intellectuele collaboratie met de Duitse bezetter. Van 1932 tot 1938 was hij hoofdredacteur van de vijfde druk der Winkler Prins Encyclopedie.
van 1948 tot 1955 was hij werkzaam als leraar Nederlands aan het lyceum in Oostburg, Zeeuws-Vlaanderen
Hij was gespecialiseerd in de etymologie, de plaatsnaamkunde en de Germaanse mythologie.
Zijn bekendste werk is zijn Etymologisch Woordenboek (1958).
