“Aum represents four states. Three of these states are represented by each of the letters, and we experience them regularly. The fourth state is the higher truth that contains the other three and is represented by the silence that follows aum. I will break it down. “A” is associated with the waking state. “U” is associated with the dream state. “M” is associated with the deep sleep state. These are, more or less, all possible states of our experience. The “fourth state,” turiya, is the ultimate reality. This is what we actually are and all the other states within it. This fourth state is pure existence, consciousness, bliss: Nirguna Brahman.”
