I'm a recovering software engineer with a background in computational electromagnetics. I run a small press called Roguelikefiction, which explores experimental texts, video games, and the convergence of the two. My current reading breakfast consists of fantasy, Rabelais, ancient history, Pynchon, and a pat or two of romantic poetry. On the sideboard I keep some math along with Dr. Seuss and William S. Burroughs. My doctor says I need more Latin in my diet.

Shadow Ticket by Thomas Pynchon
"Not that there ever is, but there will be ZERO objectivity in the following. Why would there be?

I’ve made no bones about the outsized role/influence Pynchon played in my formative years, namely 16ish and within that wheelhouse of formal Self cementin" Read more of this review »

Edgar Allan Poe
“Science! true daughter of Old Time thou art!
Who alterest all things with thy peering eyes.
Why preyest thou thus upon the poet's heart,
Vulture, whose wings are dull realities?
How should he love thee? or how deem thee wise?
Who wouldst not leave him in his wandering
To seek for treasure in the jewelled skies,
Albeit he soared with an undaunted wing?
Hast thou not dragged Diana from her car?
And driven the Hamadryad from the wood
To seek a shelter in some happier star?
Hast thou not torn the Naiad from her flood,
The Elfin from the green grass, and from me
The summer dream beneath the tamarind tree?”
Edgar Allen Poe

Virginia Woolf
“He would give every penny he has (such is the malignity of the germ) to write one little book and become famous; yet all the gold in Peru will not buy him the treasure of a well-turned line.”
Virginia Woolf, Orlando

Clark Ashton Smith
“Bow down, I am the emperor of dreams.”
Clark Ashton Smith, The Last Oblivion: Best Fantastic Poetry of Clark Ashton Smith

Lord Byron
“But 'why then publish?' There are no rewards
Of fame or profit when the world grows weary.
I ask in turn why do you play at cards?
Why drink? Why read? To make some hour less dreary.
It occupies me to turn back regards
On what I've seen or pondered, sad or cheery,
And what I write I cast upon the stream
To swim or sink. I have had at least my dream.”
Lord Byron, Don Juan

Frank Zappa
“Information is not knowledge.
Knowledge is not wisdom.
Wisdom is not truth.
Truth is not beauty.
Beauty is not love.
Love is not music.
Music is THE BEST.”
Frank Zappa

Glenn Russell Thanks for asking to be friends and your encouragement on Barth's Life-Story and Chimera. I broke an intellectual sweat doing the final write-up of Life-Story yesterday - posted my final review last night. One of the most challenging reads (and reviews) I've encountered.

After a batch of Barth-Coover-Barthelme short story reviews I'll get to Chimera. Meanwhile, you might enjoy the Leonard Michaels NY Times review of this novel when first published, one of the best book reviews I've ever come across. http://www.nytimes.com/books/98/06/21...
