Bryan Gaensler is Dean of Physical and Biological Sciences and Professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of California Santa Cruz. He received his PhD from the University of Sydney in 1999, and subsequently held positions at MIT, the Smithsonian Institution, Harvard University, the University of Sydney and the University of Toronto, before taking up his current role in 2023. Gaensler has authored more than 450 scientific papers on cosmic magnetism, neutron stars, supernovae and the interstellar medium, while his popular astronomy book "Extreme Cosmos" was published worldwide by Penguin in 2012 and has been translated into five languages.
