So okay, there's absurd and then there's absurd. In the book's title story, absurdity is defined by three sentient beings "pinioned" to a wall in a suburban home, waiting to be "pulsed" into acting out spoken-word performances by their maestro, Mr. Untermeyer. As Mr. U. sends facts, figures and speeches flowing through his three marionettes, they come to life in a unique way, performers in a play intended for the amusement of Mr. and Mrs. U.'s party guests. A delightful aside is when Mrs. U. calls out for her husband and murmurs "Oh for Lord's sake" upon hearing that he's in the family room rehearsing, yet again, much like a suburban wife might respond to her husband changing the spark plugs, yet again, on that damn muscle-car in the garage. Mr. U. works and reworks these performances, "jamming" he calls it, until the tone and flavor of each piece meets his approval. And what of the three people hanging from a wall and spouting these monologues? They're delighted to be there, thank you; after all, they can't remember a time when they've done anything else. That lack of memory might portend trouble in the long run. Also troubling, and hilarious, is Mrs. U.'s use of one of the three people pegged to the wall as a sort of sex toy—after all they can be programmed to do or say anything one desires. At the moment, however, there's trouble in paradise, or at least Suburbia; Mr. U.'s last live performance was a dud and he's channeling all his energy into making his next show an unqualified success. Also "adult son Mike" is none too happy with his parents' use of actual living people as a form of weekend entertainment. So, there's that too
Here's where Saunders is at his most brilliant: his three regulars, along with a choir of eleven singers, are being programmed to deliver the granddaddy of performances, tonight, for some of the Untermeyer's closest friends. Electricity is in the air, and when the program begins, Mr. and Mrs. U.'s guests are in for a treat, as are we. Saunders proceeds to have the regulars on the wall (each playing multiple roles) deliver the true story of General George Custer's Battle of the Little Big Horn. Well researched, gripping, and told from multiple perspectives, the story (along with songs and the sounds of battle, as performed by the choir) holds the Untermeyer's guests, and us, spellbound. Amazing! A short story within a short story that another writer might have mentioned in passing becomes the centerpiece of the story for a dozen or so pages and it's not even necessary to the main plot.
By show's end, the Untermeyer's, their guests, and those "performers" pinioned to the wall will experience a series of life-changing events, and maybe, just maybe, the use of General Custer as a metaphor wasn't entirely coincidental.

The story mentioned above, "Liberation Day" was my favorite of the collection—but not by much. Each of the eight other offerings here creates a unique, usually hilarious, world of their own— often along with their own take on language ("Elliott Spencer") or current events ("Love Letter") I'd be hard-pressed to rank the stories from one to nine. What an interesting book. What an interesting and flawed and maddening book. I plopped down thirty dollars for a hardcover copy, based mostly on having just seen the movie version of Alam's bestseller "Leave the World Behind" and having listened to a What an interesting book. I plopped down thirty dollars for a hardcover copy, based mostly on having just seen the movie version of Alam's bestseller "Leave the World Behind" and having listened to an in-depth interview with the author on NPR. The film stars Julia Roberts, Mahershala Ali and Ethan Hawke and the interview was hosted by NPR's "Fresh Air." That's the big league, folks. And Rumaan Alam is a writer with big ideas. Or, more accurately, simple ideas spun out into great big, intricate stories as in "Leave the World Behind." That's okay, simple ideas are usually best, and the plot here is deceptively so — a young, working-class (by New York City standards) Black woman takes a job at the charitable foundation of an aging billionaire who is in the process of giving away most of his fortune, thereby making the world a better place and insuring his own legacy in the process. The simple idea is that the heroine, Brooke, has never been in close proximity to such enormous wealth. Who has? How will she (and by extension, we) behave when seeing an angle that could lead to her possibly enriching herself while at the same time carrying on the foundation's good work. Tantalizing stuff.

The problem, for me at least, is that I never felt the kind of desperation from Brooke that would lead, eventually, to an otherwise solid citizen selling their soul for the (unnamed amount) needed to purchase a NYC apartment. Not a large apartment, understand, just a nice spot she's found where she can hide from the world and dream of better days. Her plan is murky at best, somewhat illegal, and Brooke seemed too smart a character to contemplate such a dumb move. But there it is, minus spoilers. Still, I read on, hoping for a big reveal and telling myself that, okay, we're in psychological territory here, watching as a character unravels due to simply being so close to a thing that they can almost, but not quite, reach out and touch it. This is where the novel lost me for a second time. Again, no spoilers, but my thinking is "if you're in, you're in." Finally, Brooke seems to have come to this same conclusion, but her dreamed-of moment arrives with a whimper, not a bang. The final chapters seem to imply that the weeks building up to this point have been too much for our protagonist. At story's end she's either crossed a line into a fantasy world or is seeing life clearly for the first time; I wish I knew which. An interesting book. An interesting and flawed and maddening book.

And finally—Brooke is employed by a foundation worth more than three billion dollars. The eighty-something businessman at the heart of the story wants to give away his money quickly, before he departs this mortal coil. Yet, in the entire course of the novel (with a whole team of do-gooders seeking out worthy charities to donate to) only 3 million dollars, more-or-less, have been given away. A character later mentions that they've donated about 1% of the foundation's funds. So, okay, 30 million, but still a drop in the bucket compared to the man's worth. The billionaire's business interests literally bring in more on a daily basis than he's giving away. A few paragraphs about other donations/causes might have made this storyline more believable.
