I am not a literature expert and can't name the styles or conventions that Sebald adopted, adapted, rejected, or invented, but I find his winding, patient, eve (Note that I am not a seasoned reviewer. This is my first! And much harder than I thought.)

I am not a literature expert and can't name the styles or conventions that Sebald adopted, adapted, rejected, or invented, but I find his winding, patient, evenly paced text to be mesmerizing, not exhausting in the least, even when the end of the sentence is clearly going to be half a page away. I love that about all his books, but it's not for everyone.

He also practices, in my opinion, "radical acceptance," which enables him to write so powerfully about the Holocaust in this and other books. Radical acceptance doesn't mean "not angry" or "doesn't care" or "sees both sides." To me, radical acceptance means I am not emotionally fighting against the fact that something happened or is happening. I accept, fully, that it happened, and now I can decide what to do or say about it. In my own life, radical acceptance is very helpful for seeing things clearly and not wasting time being emotional about personal hurt--I can channel my energy into my response. That's how it feels to me that Sebald can so effectively choose how to depict the Holocaust.

In "Austerlitz" Sebald weaves together numerous narratives to build a devastating depiction of how the Holocaust unfolded in Nazi Germany, with a crescendo of rules and regulations cruelly cornering the Jewish citizens, leading to the roar of deportations and murders. He spares no detail. That he chooses as his main character a child who was on the Kindertransport and traces what happened to him is genius. With characteristic poignancy, Sebald captures tiny details and the emotions of many characters in small situations. He sees everything. He patiently sees everything.

I've read "Austerlitz" twice. The second time was much easier. I do recommend re-reading if you can.

When I read "Austerlitz," it reminded me most of "Infinite Jest" by David Foster Wallace. There are many differences between them, of course, but those encyclopedic, discursive, and penetrating bents felt similar to me. ...more
