Catherine Pozzi was born in an aristocratic and bourgeois environment at the end of the 19th century, to Samuel Pozzi, surgeon and gynecologist, and Thérèse Loth-Cazalis. Her well-educated family was friends with artists and writers, including José-Maria de Heredia and Paul Bourget. From a young age she was interested in music, and at age 11 started keeping a journal. She studied for a year in Oxford.

At the age of 19, she read the published diary of Marie Bashkirtseff, and it had a profound effect upon her, spurring her to write intensely in her own journal.

At age 25, she married the popular dramatist Édouard Bourdet. In 1909 their son Claude (later a member of the French Resistance) was born.

J'ai dit à Mariecotte : « Il n'y a plus que deux choses qui m'intéressent : le catholicisme et les robes. » Qui comprendrait ? Elle n'a pas compris... En regardant (1 h 1/2 du matin ) une délicieuse robe de Maggy Rouff ( Vogue ), je comprends que, pour moi, création de robe = pureté. C'est cette folie de pureté qui a dominé ma vie, qui me donne l'attention fascinée par la robe jamais faite encore, la robe qui n'a pas d'habitudes, la robe inhumaine. Et cela ne signifie pas « la robe jamais portée », car tout vêtement neuf suffirait : non, il faut du jamais-vu, et le jamais-vu ne suffit pas, il faut vraiment du jamais-fait. La robe à quoi aucun acte n'est intégré encore, la robe sans habitudes, sans passé, sans péché.”
