A cook but not a chef, Sariann has garnered most of her culinary knowledge from the family kitchen sages- her mother and grandmothers. In true New England fashion, the first successful dish she cooked, at age 10, was Mom's apple pie. After growing up on a working farm, Sariann attended the University of Vermont, where she became involved in the eating local and small agriculture movements, and spent time working on a dairy farm. A bit of a British history nut, she enjoys exploring traditional staple dishes, and rekindling love for foods that have been forgotten. ...more

Wheat Fields, Wind Turbines, and an 8500 Calorie Day

After our truncated day ending in Glenwood, culminating in David’s ridiculous Bigfoot burger, we tacked on the mileage we missed to the next day, resulting in a 125 miler. Riding to Goldendale was picturesque- a mostly descending road through a canyon, and a nicely graded climb to overlook the river valley. The landscape transitioned from […] Read more of this blog post »

Ayn Rand
“I could die for you. But I couldn't, and wouldn't, live for you.”
Ayn Rand, The Fountainhead

Ayn Rand
“Love is blind, they say; sex is impervious to reason and mocks the power of all philosophers. But, in fact, a person's sexual choice is the result and sum of their fundamental convictions. Tell me what a person finds sexually attractive and I will tell you their entire philosophy of life. Show me the person they sleep with and I will tell you their valuation of themselves. No matter what corruption they're taught about the virtue of selflessness, sex is the most profoundly selfish of all acts, an act which they cannot perform for any motive but their own enjoyment - just try to think of performing it in a spirit of selfless charity! - an act which is not possible in self-abasement, only in self-exultation, only on the confidence of being desired and being worthy of desire. It is an act that forces them to stand naked in spirit, as well as in body, and accept their real ego as their standard of value. They will always be attracted to the person who reflects their deepest vision of themselves, the person whose surrender permits them to experience - or to fake - a sense of self-esteem .. Love is our response to our highest values - and can be nothing else.”
Ayn Rand

Tana French
“I had been right: freedom smelled like ozone and thunderstorms and gunpowder all at once, like snow and bonfires and cut grass, it tasted like seawater and oranges.”
Tana French, The Likeness

F. Scott Fitzgerald
“Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall.”
F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby
