The novel begins with the mysterious diary entries of Charles Carroll, an apothecary from the London Society who has been sent to the Lake District catalogue the specimens in Arthur Banes’s Pine Cottage. After Mr. Carroll loses his grip on reality and disappears, Catherine Gray, a young woman with an interest in botany and a talent for illustration take up his cataloguing work in exchange for becoming an apprentice apothecary. Catherine has grown up with an artist for a father, and her trip to the north may help secure their future, but when she arrives in the country and meets Thomas Bane, Arthur’s grandson and the groundskeeper for the property, Catherine’s careful plans begin to unravel. Thomas is no ordinary man, and his taciturn behavior harbors a series of dark secrets. Nevertheless, an attraction between Thomas and Catherine is undeniable, and much of the novel centers on the complexities of their growing relationship as Catherine learns the secrets of Pine Cottage.

The titular Bane Bloom, an elusive shape-shifting flower that has the power to grant your heart’s desire, is the key to the Pine Cottage mystery and explains the tie between Thomas and the surrounding land. Madness, folklore, superstition, and witchcraft permeate the story, and Fisher’s admiration for both the benevolent and malevolent plants (hyacinths, foxglove, and bluebells sit side by side with mandrake, hellebore, and belladonna) fill her sentences with luscious scent and eye-catching beauty. As always, her landscapes are meticulously researched, and although I have never been to the Lake District, I felt like I was wandering among the becks and fells as I turned each page. Bane Bloom perfectly blends a real world setting with frightening touches of fairy magic, and I delighted in learning about kelpies, nokken, and wodewose. The tone leans Gothic and explores serious themes like abandonment, loneliness, and isolation, but beneath it all is a strain of beauty and a reverence for the natural world as the village participates in celebrations to welcome the spring.

Fisher’s prose especially sings when she is exploring the relationship between Catherine and Thomas. Although the book is told primarily from Catherine’s point of view, a few chapters allow Thomas to tell his own story, and the blend of both voices helps the reader feel more invested in their courtship. The romance between Catherine and Thomas is a slow burn, but it is also quite sensual since both characters stand somewhat outside the gendered and social expectations of Victorian society. The ups and downs of their relationship will make readers swoon, and the mystery of how they will discover their happily ever after is as intriguing as the mystery of the Bane Bloom.

Although reading the first two books in the series (Forest of Dreams and Whispers: A Sleeping Beauty Retelling and Mountain of Mirrors and Starlight: A Snow White Retelling) is ideal, Macdonald provides a succinct overview of the plots and characters along with a list of tropes and triggers to perfectly prepare new readers to enter her gender-swapped Beauty and the Beast retelling, Realm of Winter and Roses.

The story focuses on Beau, the son of the King Hawthorne, a fairy once cursed to sleep for one-hundred years, and Queen Juliana, the once mortal woman who woke him from a sleeping curse with her kiss. The epic love story between the King and Queen who have pledged themselves to one another so fully neither can live without the other, has set the precedent for their grown children. Although Aislinn Ardenthorn, the eldest child and heir to the throne of Faerie found the true love of her life in the second installment of the series, Beau, the 19 year-year-old son with an artist’s heart, begins the third book wondering if he will ever feel for someone so deeply. While following his battle-ready mother into the Winter Realm, he finds himself in danger and is saved and nursed back to life in an enchanted castle inside the Realm of Eternal Spring. Trapped by vines which seal the entrance and exit to all but its monstrous master, Beau finds comfort in the arms of the castle’s only resident, a shapeshifter named Caoimhe with a monstrous past of her own.

I adored this book which presents an endearing twist on my favorite fairy tale. Beau is not the Prince Charming of lore, but a sensitive and inquisitive soul who would rather draw than fight, and Caoimhe is no Damsel in Distress. She is a fierce and resilient force who strives to do the right thing in the face of evil. The slow-burn development of their relationship is artfully done, and the witty dialogue that accompanies the interactions between two people from vastly different backgrounds made me laugh out loud. When the two young lovers decide to hold a ball for themselves, Beau’s fashion is half-suit and half-gown in “defiance of both,” and Caoimhe, while beautiful, is an “other” with a tail, always ready to fight and defend the man she loves. While Beau is caught in the Realm of Eternal Spring, his mother’s whereabouts are completely unknown, and his father and sister, Hawthorne and Aislinn, launch an epic journey to rescue them, bringing closure to the saga of the Fae that has stretched itself across three books and generations of time.

This is high fantasy with battles, villains, and systems of magic, but Macdonald’s prose also carries a cozy, contemplative, literary vibe, forcing readers to consider what makes a villain monstrous and how all living beings act as shapeshifters, moving through life by adapting to their circumstances. If, like Beau, your dark side is “navy blue,” but you still enjoy all the drama fairy lore has to offer, check out Katherine Macdonald’s series. Grossman’s books are historical romance at its best, and she deftly weaves real-world details into her fairy tale plot, educating readers about the plight of Jewish people during the Regency era. Characters are both Ashkenazi and Sephardi, and Grossman poignantly illustrates the conflicts between them and the gentile world as she introduces Jewish traditions, rituals, and beliefs. A note at the back of the book provides in-depth historical context for the characters and situations in the story, using the miraculous transformations found in fairy tales as a metaphor for the social transformations required to combat contemporary prejudice and marginalization. These poignant messages are balanced with witty banter and dialogue that often made me laugh out loud. Grossman’s ability to provide Jewish representation while gifting her readers a romance propelled by joy, heat, and passion is admirable, and this is what sets her work apart from typical regency love stories.

Beauty and the Beast is my favorite fairy tale, so while I have long been a fan of Grossman’s Once Upon the East End series, it came as no surprise that Dearest Beast is my favorite so far! Fans of the series will recognize characters like Isabelle, Hannah, and Sol, but those new to Grossman will easily navigate the East End as they note the markers of a Beauty and the Beast tale: a couple ill-suited to each other but simmering with passion, a hothouse of cultivated roses, and a luscious library, three stories high with ladders climbing up to the ceiling and warm patterned rugs on the floor. The relationship between Roger and Rebecca is the quintessential enemies-to-lovers tale, and at thirty-six and thirty years of age respectively, they are far from inexperienced in matters of the flesh. Their frank discussions of sexual intimacy and their unadulterated joy in its other’s bodies is refreshing, and I adored Grossman’s balance between steamy scenes and scenes which explore Roger’s children as they grapple with their father’s new relationships. The children fall in love with Rebecca as surely as Roger does, and readers will eagerly turn pages as the “beastly” woman “Awful Roger” wants removed from his home and life becomes the woman he cannot live without.

If you enjoy smart, witty, and steamy fairy tale-themed romance, pick up a copy of Dearest Beast. I loved it!

Morgyn offers gorgeous descriptions of the Gothic homestead set on the side of the cliff alongside thrilling adventures through the streets of Seattle. Although the book features a romance subplot between Judeth and Levi, the bookstore owner who helps her solve a series of mysterious riddles, the story’s strength is its commentary on pain as a source of magic and power. “Secretly, all women burn,” Judeth’s mother says shortly before the family estate goes up in flames. “To be a woman is to be fire.” Judeth learns she is a fire rover, and her interactions with the Fathom put her into contact with night bearers (who learn to cast themselves in shadow to escape abuse) and water diviners (who push their powers down in an effort to protect themselves). Steeped in mythology, feminine rage, and Gothic vibes, this book also explores difficult issues like sexual assault, suicidal ideation, and incest. The first half of the book establishes setting, initiates mystery, and explores the past’s influence on the present, and the second half of the book launches into fast-paced action.

Fans of Morgyn’s previous books The Witches of Bone Hill and The Bane Witch will find much to love in Only Spell Deep. If you enjoy stories which heal generational trauma through the grasping and wielding of magical power give her books a try!

The prologue to Fire & Ice immediately draws readers in to an exciting scene as raiders from the North bring their Silver Dragon to plunder the islands and steal its children. Eleven-year-old Benchu loses his family in the raid, and readers next meet him as he jumps along the rooftops after curfew with his friend and fellow orphan Mai-Lin. The head of the Night Watch escorts the two children back to their caretaker Madame Fru who gently reprimands them and reminds them of their great potential, but Benchu and Mai-Lin, bent on revenge against the Northmen, continue to thwart the rules as they plot to join the Denchi Assassins.
