When Mina Penrose, a lonely young woman who spends her days working in a tearoom called The Magpie in 1854 Cornwall, discovers a dead body on the heath, she becomes embroiled in a mystery concerning Harker Tregarrick, the elusive aristocrat living alone on a centuries-old estate. Together, the unlikely pair must use their intelligence and otherworldly gifts to unravel the folkloric haunting plaguing their village while navigating the growing romance between them.

The character’s names hint at the presence of vampires, but instead of blood-thirsty demons, readers will find a lonely vampire cursed with a family affliction. Harker uses alchemical concoctions to stave off his violent desires, but his attraction to the sweet, tea-leaf reading Mina challenges his restraint. Their attraction to each other is further complicated by the suspicions of the villagers, including Mina’s twin brother Jack, who will risk everything he has to save his sister. Fans of vampire literature, Gothic atmosphere, and cozy, slow-burn romance will devour this book!

Fisher shines in creating immersive settings, and her village of Roche Rock in Cornwall is no exception. She uses beautiful language to describe the fog and the moors, the windswept pathways and the crumbling chapel. These moody images are set against the cozy tearoom and the subtle sense of magic that comes from divination, and beneath it all is a forbidden yearning for love and acceptance as the antidote to loneliness. I especially loved Fisher’s nods to Jane Rochester from Salt & Broom, her use of a quote from Jon Polidori’s The Vampyre to set the stage for her tale, and her balance of Mina’s first-person pint of view with Harker’s voice and interjections. The mystery propelled me to keep reading in the hopes of discovering the killer, but Tea & Alchemy is a book to which I will return whenever I am longing for the comforts that only Gothic literature, sumptuous descriptions, and romantic mystery can provide. Pour yourself a cup of tea, light a flickering candle, curl up beneath a warm blanket, and let Sharon Lynn Fisher’s writing alchemize the everyday world into a realm of magic. Goss has crafted an anthology of old and new stories designed to push readers past the defined boundaries of speculative fiction, and the characters, prose, and insight found within its pages will linger long after the book has been closed.

Goss, who was born in Hungary and immigrated to America during her childhood, uses her personal experiences to create fictional stories which capture the harrowing experience of liminality. In selections like Dora/Dora: An Autobiography and To Budapest, With Love, Goss explores her childhood home, honoring it while wondering about the effect it might have had upon a young woman’s life experiences. Goss also makes use of her deep knowledge of Victorian literature and feminist theories to explore well-known 19th century characters including Dracula’s Mina Harker and Frankenstein’s daughter. Fans of The Extraordinary Adventures of the Athena Club, a trilogy about the daughters of infamous Victorian monsters (Mary Jekyll, Diana Hyde, Beatrice Rappaccini, Catherin Moreau, and Justine Frankenstein) will find an origin story in The Mad Scientist’s Daughter, and those who love folkloric characters like the Snow Queen will enjoy England Under the White Witch. Goss uses her extensive talents to present multiple variants of complex characters while rounding out the flat characters in the background of famous stories. Most of the tales contain an epistolary element which mires them in 19th century sensibilities while providing clear contemporary context. Although each selection can be enjoyed in isolation, taken together, images, themes, and characters resonate, creating a deep connection between the writer and her readers.

Letters from an Imaginary Country is the latest brilliant work from an expert writer. The first three stories, A Patchwork of Puddles, The Web and the Wildwood, and The Emperor’s Mistake all engage with sewing imagery, setting the tone for the way Wade’s collection stitches together well-loved tales with creative new explorations of human life, deftly establishing the artistry of storytelling as a magic all its own.

The Tapestry Unravels features plenty of stories set in far-off fairy tale landscapes, but some tales bring the magic to contemporary settings with nixies that lurk in bathtubs and mobile apps that allow young, sheltered daughters to transport themselves to enchanted ballrooms. Fairy Tale aficionados will find reworkings of The Emperor’s New Clothes, The Twelve Dancing Princesses, and The Snow Queen, but the collection also holds references to classic poems like The Lady of Shalott and Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came along with captivating explorations of folklore and folktale. There are prophetic birds, fairy abductions, and trapped princesses, but each story contains a twist, allowing characters like aging housewives and fairy godmothers to have adventures all their own. Of particular note are Listen Hard and A Prophet in his Own Country, two distinctly separate tales which are beautifully woven together, and The Goose and his Girl, a heartfelt romantic reworking of an ancient animal bridegroom tale. As I made my way through the collection, I found each new tale to be one of my favorites, though Turn to Me, which poignantly explores both the depth of devotion and the beauty of creating new art from slivered fragments of material, will always remain nestled deep in my heart.

And, if the stories themselves are not gifts enough, Wade, in collaboration with cover artist Emma Howitt, has given readers a stunning visual tapestry to accompany her tales. Characters and scenes from each of the twelve stories are displayed on the front and back cover, and I found myself joyfully searching the detailed illustration each time I finished a tale. At the end of the collection are story notes which explore Wade’s personal inspirations and point readers back to the traditional tales from which her stories have come. Wade also provides an inspirational note titled Write your Own Fairy Tale which encourages readers to unroll and reweave stories of their own.

I read a lot of fairy tales and I read a lot of books, but The Tapestry Unravels has found a special place of honor upon my shelves. It is a treasure chest of folkloric writing that sings with inspiration, and it is a must-read for anyone who looks for magic in the world. I love it! ...more

When Bay discovers that her mother is not dead but is a mermaid and the Queen of the Pacific, she escapes her father’s care and tries to uncover the truth of her own past. The adventure takes her to coastal towns in the liminal space between the land and the sea where mermaid lore is more than a story, and before long, Bay submerges beneath the waves, learning the secrets her father hoped to keep from her.

In addition to being a story about finding true identity, this is a tale of found family. Bay encounters twins, Catalina and Cyrus, who become a family to her as she faces dangers she never anticipated. Catalina, the captain of a ship named The Contessa, is a mermaid, and Cyrus, a wise-cracking and suspicious teen ignites new feelings of frustration and love in Bay. Bay must learn to accept help from the people who love her and to reconciles the competing voices in her head (the “Light-Voice” and the “Darkness”) in order to understand her past and make difficult choices about her future. Although her story is a fantastical one complete with mermaids and sea-witches, her path is one that young adult readers can recognize and learn from.

I love this beautiful book which is perfect for the nostalgia of a summer afternoon! Aguiar’s descriptions of the sea and the seaside villages where merfolk roam transported me to the ocean and made me long for crisp, salt breezes. I especially loved the writer’s creation of mermaid folklore, structuring it as an alternate universe filled with unique rules and regulations. Mermaids in this novel can willfully transform themselves into humans, and the villages situated along the liminal coasts are careful not to produce harmful waste that can damage the oceans. This novel is a perfect combination of teenage rebellion, young love, and fantasy quests, with lots of twists and turns to keep readers guessing, and I can’t wait for the sequel! The first part of the novel focuses on Leda, a young widow who speaks directly to her deceased husband as she goes about the daily tasks of caring for the goats on her property called Way Out Farm. In the depths of her grief, she adopts a rescue dog and names him Sirius, after the star that heralds the dog days of summer. She begins volunteering at soup kitchens to put her own struggles into wider perspective, and when money is tight, she takes a job as an adjunct writing professor at the local college. The connections she forges with the people she meets allow her to embrace the joys and pains of human life. She finds solace in the cyclical turning of the seasons and the endless rotation of the stars, inviting her new friends to celebrate the equinoxes and solstices which mark the forward progression of time.

As the book moves toward its second part, the story branches deeper into the experiences of Leda’s friend Shannon, a single mother of two young children who is desperate to escape the harmful effects of mountaintop mining that have filled Appalachia with pollution and disease. As Leda’s relationship with Shannon’s cousin Sean (a war veteran suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) develops, and as Shannon connects with a new female partner, readers learn about the family's migration to from Ireland to America. Harrington deftly weaves Irish folklore and fairy stories through the narrative, introducing readers to the Celtic cross-quarter holidays that round out the wheel of the year. Dedicated to "the swallows who build in the eaves of houses," In Circling Flight is a love song to the Appalachian landscape and the resilient people who live there.

In addition to a compelling plot, Harrington presents a beautifully crafted story which spirals forward with grace and precision. “I can’t understand how you make something this soft and pretty from what grows on the back of a goat and comes out of the mouth of a caterpillar,” Sean tells Leda in reference to the shawl she has knitted from the cashmere threads of her goat’s fur, and this casual statement serves as a symbol of the miraculous transformations scattered throughout the novel. Harrington’s characters are fully formed humans who turn their pain and grief into beauty and connection through the transformative power of storytelling.
