“Water dripped from the slimy planks above, and the isopods that snacked on the ship would occasionally fall on the slaves' heads, eliciting cries of helplessness. The floor was oily and discolored, the benches were splintering, and the manacles were covered with bubbling, orange rust. The waste buckets would often fall, spilling their contents down the galley, but the sludge was only cleaned when the ship reached the shore, and so it would squelch beneath the slaves' bare feet for days or even weeks.”
