Alice Cooper, born Vincent Damon Furnier, is an American rock singer and songwriter widely regarded as a pioneer of shock rock. Known for his raspy voice and horror-inspired performances, he helped transform the rock concert into a theatrical spectacle. His stage persona drew on horror films, vaudeville and garage rock, combining music with props such as guillotines, electric chairs, fake blood and live snakes. Cooper was raised in Arizona after his family moved from Detroit. As a teenager, he formed a band with fellow students, initially performing as the Earwigs and the Spiders. The group eventually adopted the name Alice Cooper, which became both the band's identity and the singer's stage name. After moving to Los Angeles, the musicians attracted the attention of Frank Zappa, who signed them to his record label in 1969. Their early albums, Pretties for You (1969) and Easy Action (1970), attracted limited attention, but producer Bob Ezrin helped them establish a harder sound. Love It to Death (1971) brought their breakthrough, driven by the single "I'm Eighteen". The band followed with successful albums including Killer (1971), School's Out (1972) and Billion Dollar Babies (1973). Their theatrical concerts became notorious for staged executions and other shocking effects. The group became a major commercial act, while Cooper's stage character made him one of rock's most recognizable frontmen. Following Muscle of Love (1973), the original group split. Furnier retained the name Alice Cooper and began recording as a solo artist. His first solo album, Welcome to My Nightmare (1975), developed the theatrical approach through a concept album and elaborate concert production. It was followed by Alice Cooper Goes to Hell (1976) and Lace and Whiskey (1977), while "Only Women Bleed" and "You and Me" broadened his audience. During the late 1970s, personal difficulties and alcohol dependence affected his career. After seeking treatment, he returned to recording, experimenting with new wave and heavy metal on Flush the Fashion (1980), Constrictor (1986) and Raise Your Fist and Yell (1987). He achieved a commercial comeback with Trash (1989), featuring the hit "Poison", followed by Hey Stoopid (1991). Later releases revisited the theatrical style that had defined his earlier work. His albums include The Last Temptation (1994), Brutal Planet (2000), Welcome 2 My Nightmare (2011), Paranormal (2017), Detroit Stories (2021) and Road (2023). Cooper also appeared in films and television, notably as himself in Wayne's World (1992), and launched the syndicated radio program Nights with Alice Cooper in 2004. He has written books, including his autobiography, and is known for his longstanding interest in golf. The original Alice Cooper band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011. Cooper has continued touring and recording. In 2025, the original group reunited for The Revenge of Alice Cooper, its first studio album together in more than fifty years. His influence extends across hard rock, heavy metal and punk, while his theatrical performances helped establish shock rock as a lasting form of popular entertainment, and inspiring countless later rock performers worldwide. ...more
