If sexy poetry seems like an oxymoron, see the image of “her leg/ over my hip bone” and the account of post-marital romp that “feels like it did before you signed a contract” and this fantasy of cosmic seduction: “I want/ to get drunk and wrap my legs around/ the universe as if it had a waist/ and kiss a blazing star.” These are bisexual poems, and by this I do not mean that all the poems are about bisexuality. I mean that they are tone-fluid, communing between pathos and humor, pain and playfulness. These poems put “the holy in melancholy.” They don’t fit easily into neat little categories any more than the speaker who squeezes herself “into a box of what America calls normal.” I use “speaker” loosely because many of the poems are written in second person, with the “you” representing both speaker and reader, blurring yet another boundary in “the brilliance/ of being multitudes.” IMO, there’s nothing sexier than a sense of humor, so it tracks that I found myself laughing out loud every few pages. Examples: “Show me where it hurts should be a T-shirt/ we wear into midlife,” “My Arrhythmia Makes Me Believe I’m Always in Love,” “Poem After Realizing This Is the First Time in Years I Haven’t Failed My Doctor’s Mental Health Test,” and the epigraph from “Young Sirens”: “Twitter: If you had a mermaid phase as a kid you’re probably bisexual now.” In one my favorites, “Alexa, Why Am I Falling Apart?”, Agodon fuses mental health and modern technology in a hilarious yet heartbreaking interaction with a digital assistant, prompting responses like this from Alexa: “I’m sorry, I don’t know ‘Why Am I Falling Apart,’ but/ I do have ‘Everybody Hurts’ by R.E.M. on Prime Music,” “You do not have ‘Why Am I Falling Apart’/ on your shopping list. Do you want me to add that for you?” and “Did you want me to order glue, duct tape, zip ties, or a broom?” The opening line of “Try This” is “Imagine there is no wrong way to love.” We can replace love with write, read, think, be. Imagine there is no wrong way to be. In poem after poem—devotion after devotion—, Agodon does just this, exploring “how vast we are.” Musing on black widow spiders, she likens the poem to “a ransom note/ to an old self.” Accidental Devotions is a love letter to a future self—a manifesto for living lustfully. The world she creates in this novel-in-verse is nowhere we’ve been before, either. The linked poems take us along with Phoebe and her new husband, Miles, as they journey in 1875 from their home in central Oregon to California’s Surprise Valley. Fisk captures their first year of marriage with breathtaking tenderness. There is a moment when Miles sees Phoebe removing her shoes and stockings: “her small feet/ are planted so firmly on the ground, unshakeable,/ he thinks he could weep.” I get it, Miles. I felt myself on the verge of weeping throughout this book. Is it because my youngest daughter is newly married? Because my son is marrying this summer? Because I’m wistfully recalling my own wedding thirty-four years ago? Maybe. But I think it’s mostly because Fisk transports us to the wagon ride and rustic cabin, the vistas, the fields, the dust, the shy glances of young love. Meanwhile, she doesn’t gloss over the gritty reality, whether it’s blood from a butchered rabbit or a menstrual pad. And wow, who knew wagon-era sex could be so steamy! “[H]e is talking to her with his skin and his grip and his hips rocking,/ speeding up, breath harder, palms on her breasts, her hair sweeping/ his face, the sweat rising slick on them both, her voice making a noise/ he’s never heard before.” I love how she captures the small comforts of routine, as in this scene from “Cradle”: “Phoebe rocks, knitting/ another tiny sleeve. They have always known/ how to share silence, if you can call the mad/ chorus of crickets at this hour silence,/ and the hooting of an owl.” Yes, we are nowhere we have ever been. But even though 150 years separate us from Phoebe and Miles, we see ourselves in them thanks to Fisk’s extraordinary gift for creating compelling narrative and vivid imagery. Heck, it could be featured in People magazine. But what is this “it”? When poet Jennifer Sperry Steinorth met visual artist Jenny Walton at an artist residency nearly a decade ago, Steinorth was struck by Walton’s watercolor series “Match/Enemy” which documents her experience on the dating app OK Cupid. In her paintings, Walton recreates profile pictures of men who chose to “obscure, alter, or hide their facial features.” Steinorth was inspired to write poetic responses to this “Sears catalog of singles,” and the result is a volume of 39 poems and 50+ paintings. In many of the images, the subjects’ faces are hidden (behind ski masks, in SCUBA diving suits, or in the case of a repeated image of a man scrubbing a floor — redacted). In others, the faces are replaced by other body parts (hands buttoning shirtsleeve cuffs, tatts, eyes, headless torsos, and lots and lots of crotches — “hard pass” is a phallic-shaped concrete (ha!) poem: “look at/ my boner/ look at my/ boner look/ at my look/ at my look/ at my boner…” There are substitutes (dogs, a clock, toilet paper rolls, a black box) and costumes (Superman and Elvis). In the most confounding, there is the image of a man with another woman, possibly a former love (“can’t he see the ashes/ disseminating from their laced silhouettes?”). The watercolors are fascinating in themselves, but Steinorth’s poems—which invent a single woman persona imagining the motivations of these men—give the paintings another life, like two pulses that keep their own rhythm but periodically sync up. If, as Steinorth considers, “maybe/ it’s not power but plot that defines what’s sexy,” then her narratives are Sophia Loren in Marriage Italian Style. Likewise, her rhymes titillate and surprise: common/ramen, cadaver/MacGyver, shimmy/vulnerability. And if her craft were in my bed, I wouldn’t sleep in the bathtub (see her crown-adjacent sonnets in which a last line begets the next first line — what she does with “marriage” and “miscarriage” is an absolute gut punch). It’s important that these are boys, not men, even though they’re old enough to vote and enlist. As Steinorth writes in her origin story: “‘Boys’ calls to my mind ‘boys will be boys’ & bro-culture, but also the innocence of adolescence, the giddiness of new romance, and the vulnerability of the child self.” The preposition in 𝘉𝘰𝘺𝘴 𝘉𝘦𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘥 𝘎𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘴 is important, too: “behind” suggests imprisonment behind camera/phone/computer screens as well as impersonalization. The title also suggests "boys under glass," as Steinorth’s musings put their self-projected self-images under a microscope. There is a 13-page works cited — “(Some) Texts Digested” — section. A poet I admire once described my poetry as having verve, and I kind of knew what he meant…and I kind of didn’t. Yet now I find myself wanting to say Cal Freeman’s poems have verve. Only I want to exclaim it: Cal Freeman’s poems have verve! So I’m going to try to figure out what I mean as I think through his latest book, The Weather of Our Names. People with verve are spirited and enthusiastic. I think this translates to poetry in pacing and momentum which are often propelled by colloquialism, humor, and/or tonal range. Vervy poems—let’s just call them that—are marked by linguistic play and association, with one image sparking the next. Personal experience, philosophy, and pop culture can share the same breath. They’re frequently self-referential, as in “Spangle/ blue eyes, this wine glass, spangle because ‘coruscate’/ sounds too strange and arcane, even for a poem/ of mine.” Punctuation—or lack thereof—and repetition can contribute to the poem’s energy. Example: “Dichotomy Paradox as Non-Fungible Token,” the title of which telegraphs the tone, uses anaphora (“I want…”) to take us from general malaise to possums to rumination on a father which then leads to a flower: “I want my father back./ I want a different father with the same tastes/ and the same loves. I want a different flower/ than what blooms in the boxwood hedges/ without germination.” Some of the verviest poems in this collection are the nine alleged Yelp reviews of restaurants and taverns: “Yelping the Huron River Inn,” “Yelping Heck’s Bar,” “Yelping Portofino Restaurant,” etc. (AutoCorrect wants to change verviest to nerviest. Maybe vervy poems are nervy? And now it wants to change vervy to very. Vervy poems are very nervy.) I say “alleged” because these are not, of course, actual reviews. They’re meditations on memories and connections he associates with the establishments. “Yelping the Waterfront” is about a Detroit-area restaurant, but it also mentions Aristotle and Archimedes’ buoyancy principle and international borders and ends with this image: “I think about the phone my wife dropped from a boat/ in Lake Erie and wonder about its final ping/ as I text her a picture of the moon above the water.” I have in mind to give my students a “Yelping” prompt as an “after” poem assignment. How cool would that be? I first encountered Freeman’s work when I published his poem “Elegy for Uncle Christopher” in the anthology The Book of Jobs: Poems About Work (available free online). Robbi Nester opens her poem “Summer, Sheltering in Place” with the experience of a proto-drone effect: “When I was small, I used to wake before the sun/ to sit in the still-dark living room, turn on the T.V.,/ and bathe in the test pattern’s bright glow.” (If you’re under 40, google “test pattern.”) 𝘈𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘋𝘪𝘴𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘢𝘳 is a collection of ekphrastic poems, most of which are accompanied by the image on which they’re based. Nester’s engagement with the art is similar to bathing in the television screen and listening to ambient music: she immerses herself in its hum, which frees her to explore ideas beyond the frame. While I love seeing the artworks—and feel serious agita reading the acknowledgments, having just completed the permissions from hell for an edited anthology—I don’t think the book needs these visuals. This is perhaps the ultimate compliment for ekphrastic poems: they stand on their own. AutoCorrect changed “ekphrastic” to “emphatic,” which is not at all the case—these poems are quietly wise, not loudly insistent. Take, for example, “Still Standing” (based on David Graeme Baker’s painting “Ivy and Winslow”) which moves gently from a teacher at a blackboard to a school shooting:

…She probes a past
she doesn’t really know, like a scientist who
studies creatures making their own cold light
in the deepest ocean, dreams and dreams again
about this ruined room, its light and shadows,
settled dust, compelled to paint it in bright hues,
to return and make this place a kind of shrine,

I suppose almost every ekphrastic poem can be read as ars poetica, so it’s no surprise that many of the poems in 𝘈𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘋𝘪𝘴𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘢𝘳 shine a light on artistic process. “The Burning” details J.M.W. Turner’s last-minute decision to set the buildings ablaze in “The Burning of the Houses of Lords and Commons, 16 October 1934.” The poem ends with “In the gallery, onlookers observed/ as it took shape, a pattern/ of un-being, picture of flux.” Maybe a state of flux is what we need in order to create. And then I read Francine Witte’s “Pizza Hut, 1990” and realize it absolutely can. This is not a poem aimed only at those of us who remember the red booths & checkered tablecloths, the early 90s, and the first Gulf War. It goes beyond triggering my own memory of the time my husband, in the throes of parenting toddlers, picked up a pepperoni pie from Pizza Hut and said to the cashier, “Nighty night” as if tucking him into bed. The poem sets the scene with a mood of sounds—“rain stutter,” “waitress stacatto,” “fizzing” sodas—and then takes a surprising turn when we realize the speaker is not thinking about weather or restaurants but heartbreak as she implores the rain to fall “in one steady stream, like a river…[l]ike a man who doesn’t love me/ anymore.” This is Witte’s gift throughout 𝘚𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘋𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘗𝘪𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘓𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵: making the ordinary extraordinary. She does so by creating razor-sharp images—like the TV host in “Home Shopping” who is “a piano of teeth and a candle of eyes”—and then swerving in an unexpected direction, the infomercial amethyst becoming stars on a summer night on which the speaker lies “on a blanket with some boyfriend or other.” The tone is frequently at once humorous and poignant, as in “Supermarket, 11 AM” where we go from the cereal aisle to dating: “[I] examine/ calories per serving, total carbs, and realize/ this is more than I ever thought about when/ choosing a boy to take home.” There are stunning ekphrastic and persona poems and poems featuring non-human creatures, many of which—like Witte’s fiction—dwell in the surreal. One of my favorites is “If I Turn Animal” which reads like a midlife poem version of Rachel Yoder’s novel Nightbitch. The speaker contemplates turning “all fang-y and hungernose,” with “tooth and claw [her] only words” and ends with the image of a river “lapping softly like a tongue—the tongue of an animal/ settling onto the forest floor, content after a kill.” Ultimately, 𝘚𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘋𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘗𝘪𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘓𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 is about making peace with life choices and disappointments and longings and yes, even rage.
