It’s a long, hard road, and knowing that you’ve got a great book and people would know that if they’d just read it can be lonely. So, hail to Kimmey and this immensely fun, nostalgic book that ends up having way more heart than I ever thought possible.

If you read that excerpt from the jacket blurb and think “I might like that,” then you absolutely will. That’s what I thought when I read that blurb, and when I finally cracked the book I was right. But I was surprised at how much more was there. First; the writing is top-notch. I say that because indie books can be a gamble in that regard. I was several chapters in before I thought, hey this dude can really write! I got into the story. I got into the characters. I really wanted to know what was going to happen next to these kids. Kimmey, you sly dog.

Also, I’m a few years out of the pocket to really swim in the nostalgia here (now if it had been an Atari 2600 instead of a Sega) but I know the references and I know the time and place. I feel it. However, if you were a kid in 1990—even a teen—oh man, buckle up. You’re in for a treat. Chapter start pages have playlists. There are references to vaporwave, period-specific sodas, videogames. There’s something here for a certain age group, or anyone under the age of 60, really, to rally around. The very last years before everything changed, the last generation that got to grow up in pre-internet America, the last of the luckiest kids in the world. And Kimmey knows it.

Children of the Neon Bamboo is a helluva lot of fun. ...more "
