Allen considers himself a lifelong devotee of science fiction and fantasy, He has always been drawn to the intersection of history and the speculative, asking questions like, “What if the Byzantine Empire had rockets?” or “What if Tolkien’s world had taken place in the Golden Age of Piracy?”
