She spent the first thirty years in bondage in Maryland, and at the age of forty-two undertook a preaching career. In the early nineteenth century she went to Virginia where (according to William L. Andrews, editor of Six Women's Slave Narratives) "she inveighed against both the slavery of sin and the isn of slavery". Unmarried and childless, she wrote her Memoir of Old Elizabeth, a Coloured Woman (1863) at the age of ninety-seven.
