He’s a loner who’s not good at much, but what he is good at is researching murders, delivering leaflets, and stealing.

He doesn’t want much; he just wants the bullies to die and to have a friend. A friend he can trust, no matter how old. But what if that friend turned out to be a girl who has lived on blood for over 200 years?

Written originally in Swedish, John’s story has been translated by Ebba Segerberg and, despite now being in English, the story retains its Scandinavian feel.

This is certainly a unique telling of a vampire story and one that I found slightly jerky and jumpy. This was due to the cinematic telling of a story with chapters split into scenes like a movie script and directorial actions that direct the reader’s lens over the unfolding scene, visual by visual.

Here’s an example:
The squirrel darts down the trunk of the oak tree, stops, listens. A siren, in the distance.
On Bergslagsvägen an ambulance is racing by with flashing blue lights, sirens on.
Inside the ambulance there are three people.

The scenes unfold almost like cue-cards, directing the action. Scenes which constantly switch POV’s and locations within each chapter. Don’t get me wrong, it works, but the transitions between them aren’t always clear, leading to a clunky narrative. I’m not sure if this was the author’s intention or whether the translation has lost the smoothness between scenes.

That said, this is a solid horror full of shocking scenes, death, and gore, which is what you’d expect from a vampire story. But this is also a heart-breaking coming-of-age story that will have you routing for the killer and a little boy lost.

TL;DR
A cinematic, coming-of-age, vampiric horror with switching POVs and a plethora of characters. A highly recommended read.

David, his wife, Emma, and their close family and friends gather around a spitting fire goading each other to tell the best ghost story until his mother is pushed to participate. She doesn’t just say any old regurgitated ghost story, though; she pulls out a memory - a missing child and a vanishing yellow house.
Enticed by her mother-in-law’s story, Emma researches the missing boy and drags everyone (apart from the mother) on a crazy journey to find that elusive yellow house.
But she doesn’t find a house; she finds a tear in the fabric of our world. A doorway to another dimension.
What follows is a cosmic, inter-dimensional, psychological, survival horror that makes you wonder who, if any of them, will survive.

The characterisation and world building was superb and I really felt worried for the family’s predicament — they stuck together even when faced with adversity.
The world inside the Fold was pieced together brilliantly by Evans: dark, eerie, and foreboding. Everything you’d want in a horror novel. And the antagonist, strangely named, Abandon (for reasons you’ll discover), is a world controlling monster who projects his loneliness, rage, and suffering onto the Fold and its unsuspecting new inhabitants. Monsters can form in your mind just like characters in a book, but what if our emotions can alter our perceptions AND the world we’re in? How far would you go to survive?

A very well written story that hooked me and dragged me into the Fold.
The only downside for me was the character backstory breaks. The flashbacks and memories that occur, some a whole chapter long, took me, as the reader, away from the immediate action, often during intense, life-threatening scenes, which took away the momentum of the enticing incident.
That said, this is a solid cosmic horror full of heart-break and death that leans more towards psychological than gore — although there are horrific life terminations but they’re not what I’d call graphic.

TL;DR
A superbly written psychological, cosmic, survival horror with flawed characters that bond under extreme circumstances. A highly recommended read.

I hadn’t read any reviews of this book and it was my first time reading a novel by Sager. I must admit that, at first, I thought this story was building too slowly, for me at least, and I did contemplate binning it and moving onto something else, but something was keeping me from doing that. I think that was a combination of two things: Sager’s brilliant writing and the urge to find out what happened to Billy, I.e. Sager had done enough to hook me.

I won’t go into too much detail, as I don’t want to spoil things, so I’ll give the basics. This is a thriller, mystery, suspense story with a huge supernatural through line that tethers it all together. Sager did an amazing job of throwing hints and clues all through the book which, inevitably, made me change my mind back and forth as to what had happened to Billy.

The characterisation was superb and I really felt for each of them — Henry was awesome. Also, the interaction between the kids and the adults was spot on. This was especially so when we jump timelines between the present and 1994, as we also get to see the difference between the young Ethan and the present Ethan (and the other kids-to-adults, too). So it’s interesting to see what the youngsters thought and did back in 1994 compared to present day. This timeline switching also shows us that people’s memories of things that happened when they were kids can be totally wrong when recalled in the present.

An extremely well written story that hooked me and kept me guessing right to the end. For me, though, the slow-burner start drops my rating slightly. I would highly recommend it to fans of thrillers, mysteries, and coming-of-age stories.

TL;DR
A brilliant suspense thriller with superbly written characters but, sadly, one that I felt had a slow start. Despite this, it’s a highly recommended read. ...more

While Charlie is out, a family knock on the door. The father claims that he lived there as a child, and would it be okay if he showed his family around?
Strangers wandering around your house while you’re home alone? Absolutely not. Don’t be stupid.

Unfortunately, like most horror films and stories, the MC is stupid. She lets them in.

This book has had so much hype that I just had to read it. C’mon, the premise sounds awesome but the execution? Not so.

I didn’t realise this started out as a short story until I read the acknowledgments at the end. Now, the issues I had with the story make total sense (in a way).
Throughout the book there are strange documents, and transcripts of interviews and recordings, dotted between chapters. Some fit the narrative, while others don’t make sense and actually cause your reading experience to stutter, often leading to confusion.
Now, without going into too much details for fear of spoilers, the narrative follows Eve’s POV and it’s obvious early on, due to some childhood fears and trauma, that Eve is a bit of a confused unreliable narrator. There is a lot going on for her: a family that, on the surface, don’t seem in a rush to leave despite stating they’d only be fifteen minutes; a basement bigger than it should be for the house; a swarm of ants acting strangely; disappearing doors, and an annoying voice in her head from her childhood toy.

These elements all point to a potentially scary, psychological horror happening within her home, so it’s no wonder Eve is confused. So, on the surface, the fact that the narrative—especially with the confusing documents and transcripts—is confusing lends to Eve’s confused and terrified psychological state of mind. At least, that’s what I assumed at first.
Now that I know this was adapted from a short story, I’m leaning more to the fact that the short story (which, by the sounds of it, was awesome) has been puffed out with so much filler that it has lost its original narrative strength making it convoluted and weak.

For me, the story seemed like it was dragging on. The inserted documents (for the most part) just didn’t fit—they slowed the narrative and added confusion, and I found myself sighing and dragging my heels through each one. There were also other elements, besides the added documents, that seemed like unnecessary padding, which all started after Eve left the house looking for a phone.

Many reviewers have stated that they found this book terrifying, but I just don’t understand why. For the most part, I was bored and wanted something to happen, rather than just a hint of something scary and foreboding.

I read this because of the hype, but it fell short in my opinion, although I would still recommend it.

TL;DR
A superb premise and good bones for an amazing story, but too much filler, which left me confused with too many unanswered questions. Despite this, it’s a recommended read. ...more
