Eden Cole is the Deputy Head of Operations for New Independent States (NIS) and Head of the Asia Task Force. He is co-responsible for designing and managing programmes in the former Soviet states, Turkey, and Asia. Eden's main current projects are focused on the Ukraine, Afghanistan, Nepal, Indonesia and Melanesia.

The NIS team currently undertake programme and product innovation to facilitate democratic value-transfer on security sector oversight issues to democratic institutions, security sector actors, CSOs and the media. The department pursues cooperative partnerships at national and regional levels through which DCAF products and skills can be deployed.

The NIS team have cooperated extensively with other regional and international organisations. Since 2005 Eden has worked closely with UNDP Bratislava Regional Centre to promote the oversight agenda in the CIS via existing UNDP platforms in the region. Since late 2008, Eden has also worked with the UNDP Pacific Regional Centre to conduct scoping missions in Pacific Island Countries and initiate a regional conference on security governance needs for Pacific stakeholders. In Ukraine, sustained cooperation with the NATO Joint Working Group on Defence Reform has been in place since 2005 focused on parliamentary and civil society oversight, defence and intelligence reform issues. Previously, Eden also assisted with the completion of four Swiss MFA-mandated Stability Pact projects in South East Europe (2003) and conducted scoping missions with UNOMIG (2004). In-house, the team cooperates extensively with the Africa & Middle East, PfP/Special Programmes and Research departments.

Eden was educated at King's College London and has a BA (Hons.) in War Studies (First) and an MA in Medieval History (Distinction). Before joining DCAF in 2002, Mr. Cole assisted several humanitarian action projects and also worked as a contractor in the City of London at Weil, Gotshal & Manges and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer focused on international securities. ...more
