“From Aristotle to the American founding, the understanding of God moved from metaphysical plurality (many gods) toward monotheism, expressed in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Since the late eighteenth century, intellectual movements have increasingly pressed that trajectory toward the denial of any transcendent authority. When atheism or agnosticism is carried into political theories such as communism and socialism, social life is reordered. The family, religion, and civil society become subordinate to the political authority of the state. These are ideologies that America must address to remain “American”.
