Richard A. Petracca, a First Responder, was born in Rockville Centre on Long Island, New York in 1967. At the age of 6, he was found to have a loss of hearing that was corrected, but then developed into a stuttering problem. Doctors also found him to be dyslexic. This made learning to read and write a real challenge. After years of therapy and rehab, he was able to overcome the stuttering problem. His love of reading developed after he received a copy of the Lord of the Rings trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien. When he was 24, he joined the U.S. Coast Guard. While on watch as an engineer, his downtime was spent reading. Once he was out of the Coast Guard, he took up Emergency Medicine, his 2nd love.
