'Wrote for Physics Room art rag 'Log' back in the 90s.

Cranked up in my mid-30s after starting a zine called 'Incredibly Hot Sex with Hideous People' as a prankish response to getting lousy media coverage for a solo LP, i.e. thought I'd best stop whinging and make some DIY press of my own.

Twenty years later and 'Incredibly Hot Sex with Hideous People' is in its 80th issue. Two anthologies of the zine have been published: '...Before Marriage' with Clouds Publishing in 2011; and '...Diary Comics' with Pikitia Press in 2017.

A member of the Wellington Zinefest Board and instigator of Hamilton Zinefest.

I’m getting excited about the music, the ideas, the context, and I don’t even know this album! Well done, Michael Brown.
Well, that was the first half of the book. The second half delves into the minutia of the technology used to create the album and

After promising a book that necessarily faces the issues of first nations Australians, the writers visit their plight infrequently. Being a book about changes in party politics, law, resources and land use means that first nations people only appear ...more

Not the best of Stephen King. Some things successfully inferred that are then explained like in a dumbed down Hollywood movie. Also some aspects of the vernacular language and plot that clang. Still, the premise is good enough that I can’t believe th ...more

“For these victims are used to create something, works of art, that are thrown to the consumption of a world which destroyed them. The so-called artistic representation of the sheer physical pain of people beaten to the ground by rifle-butts contains, however remotely, the power of elicit enjoyment out of it. The moral of this art, not to forget for a single instant, slithers into the abyss of its opposite. The aesthetic principle of stylization, and even the solemn prayer of the chorus, make an unthinkable fate appear to have had some meaning; it is transfigured, something of its horror is removed..." Theodor Adorno, 'Commitment' republished in 'Aesthetics & Politics', Verso 1977”

“Clothes do not interest her. They hang on her body as if they are there only because there is no place else for them to go, like men on street corners, like children on the school playground on weekends.”
bell hooks, Bone Black

“Don Letts: "...the DIY thing, using what you've got to get what you need, turning your problems into your assets.
...I'd go as far a to say that this over-analysing of the late 70s incarnation of punk belittles a much bigger idea - and that is that it's an ongoing dynamic that is the birthright of all young people.”
Celeste Bell, Zoe Howe

William S. Burroughs
“We have a new type of rule now. Not one-man rule, or rule of aristocracy or plutocracy, but of small groups elevated to positions of absolute power by random pressures, and subject to political and economic factors that leave little room for decision. They are representatives of abstract forces who have reached power through surrender of self. The iron-willed dictator is a thing of the past. There will be no more Stalins, no more Hitlers. The rulers of this most insecure of all worlds are rulers by accident, inept, frightened pilots at the controls of a vast machine they cannot understand, calling in experts to tell them which buttons to push.”
William S. Burroughs, Interzone
