Edmund Ruffin



Virginia planter, Soil Scientist and political activist.

Ruffin was advocate of states rights and defended slavery. He was an pleaded for secession of the Southern States years before the American civil war.

Ruffin served as an Confederate soldier, despite his old age and is credited of firing the first shot of the war at Fort Sumter.

When the Confederates lost the war he committed suicide.
