Diem Ai Nguyen was born in 1970 on the military training base at Thu Duc, Vietnam. She was brought into the world by an American doctor, her father being stationed at the base as a sergeant in South Vietnam's army.

Fortunately, Diem's family moved to a town in the hill country, well before her birth place earned it's nickname "The Alamo", by becoming the "last stand" for a group of unfortunate soldiers who were retreating from the Viet Cong's rapid advance across Vietnam in 1975.
