OLIVE LIEFELD grew up in Seattle, Washington and accepted the Lord at 10 years of age. She and Peter Fleming attended the same church and became good friends in Olive’s teen years. She went to the University of Washington while Pete completed his Master’s Degree in 1951 and within a few months he left for the jungles of Ecuador with Jim Elliot. After two and half years in the jungles Pete returned to Seattle to married Olive in June of 1954 and she returned with him to Ecuador. A year later the “Auca” Indians were found and “Operation Auca” began. In January 1956 Pete, along with Jim Elliot, Ed McCully, Nate Saint and Roger Youderian were killed by those Indians. Olive returned to the States within a few months. Within the year she went back to Ecuador for a short time. She realized that her ministry there was over. During the following years in the States she had many speaking engagements and was involved in youth ministry on the west and east coast.

While on the east coast in 1958 she met Walter Liefeld. In 1959 they were married and she joined him in his pastoral ministry in a church on Long Island. In 1964 they moved to Deerfield, Illinois where Walt joined the faculty of New Testament at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. At Trinity Olive was involved in ministry to women students and student wives and team-taught a course with her husband. He retired in 1994 as Distinguished Professor Emeritus of New Testament. From 1991 to 1996 Walt was senior pastor of Christ Church Lake Forest until his retirement.

In January 1989 Olive returned to Ecuador after 32 years with her husband and one of her daughters and visited for the first time the Indians who were responsible for her husband’s death. Finally after many years of reflection she wrote a book on the Auca incident. Unfolding Destinies. She wrote a chapter on “The Auca Five” in the book, Ambassadors for Christ, edited by Dr. John Woodbridge, published by Moody Press.

Olive again returned to the jungles of Ecuador in the summer of 2004 accompanied by her son and daughter and four of her grandchildren to be with the Waorani Indians. Steve Saint led the group of 30 people by bus, small plane and finally canoe deep into Waorani land. Three of the Indians who were responsible for the killings helped to host the group.
