Claude Gutman est un écrivain français, né le 27 décembre 1946 en Palestine britannique. Le divorce de ses parents le conduit en France avec son père. Sa mère demeurera au kibboutz Sdot-Yam (Césarée) qu'il évoquera dans ses ouvrages.

Professeur de lettres, il quittera l'enseignement en 1988 pour se consacrer à son écriture et à celle des autres. Il crée aux éditions Syros la collection Croche-Patte, puis dirige Page Blanche (Gallimard). Il quitte Gallimard pour le Seuil où il fonde la collection Fictions-Jeunesse... Aujourd'hui, il dirige Les Universels (Folio-Junior Gallimard), abandonnant pour un temps les œuvres de fiction pour les textes fondamentaux.
