Luís Portela nasceu em 1951 no Porto, onde se licenciou em Medicina. Exerceu atividade clínica apenas durante três anos e foi durante seis docente da cadeira de Psicofisiologia, na Universidade do Porto.

Iniciou atividade empresarial com 21 anos e aos 27 assumiu a presidência da companhia farmacêutica Bial, tendo em Janeiro de 2011 passado a chairman. Também é presidente do Conselho Geral da Universidade do Porto e do Health Cluster Portugal. Foi vice-presidente da Fundação de Serralves e membro da Direção da COTEC.

Em 1994 criou com Bial e o Conselho de Reitores das Universidades Portuguesas a Fundação Bial, tendo como objetivo incentivar a investigação centrada no Homem, tanto sob os aspetos físicos como sob o ponto de vista espiritual. Est ...more
