Stephen W. Asher decades’ long career as a neurologist often found him straddling the delicate boundary that defines the human experience: the fine line separating the mind from the brain. Educated at UCLA, the University of Rochester School of Medicine, UC San Francisco, and St. Catherine's College, Oxford, he experienced a career as a neurologist that, daily, required him to confront complexities such as the nature of consciousness, the borderlands of the of mind-brain interface, how encounters between the cognitive and the physical serve to alter perspectives, and the ways in which a receptive human Stephen W. He is a supporter of the F. Scott Fitzgerald Society, the Barbara Pym Society, and the
Shakespeare Oxford Fellowship, and a proud member of PEN America. He has published
essays and short stories in British sporting literature.

He has spent many years immersed in the aesthetics of the Modernist era, in the art forms of these years, and, in particular, reading the unshackled writers who lived amongst, explored, and indeed created, the intellectuals and aesthetes who peopled these momentous decades in search of life’s durable truth.

Ceremony of Innocence, his debut novel, is a tale propelled by an intelligent, inquisitive yet skeptical young woman, and is a story filtered, perhaps tempered, through a lens of care, humility, love, and unflinching honesty.
The book is a product of the author’s intellectual life, his medical training, the Oxford years, a neurologist's career, and the years immersed in works of Modernist tradition. It is novel about the transformation of consciousness, written by someone who spent his career on this knife edge, initially viewing the mind from the scientific perspective, but now exploring it from the literary and aesthetic vantage point with a depth and definition that only these dual perspectives permit.
He lives in Boise, Idaho.
