Born in the Midwest, I grew up in Iowa where there was real dirt. My first 4 years were spent on my Aunt and Uncle's farm in Southwest Iowa with my mother while my father was in the Army during WWII.

I remember walking with my Uncle in a nearby field while he plowed with a single bottom plow and two plow horses. Yes plowing with horses only 71 years ago. The tractor had not yet been invented in the early 1940s. How much progress we have made in all fields since then. I also remember how rich and sticky the dirt was when first turned over. And I remember the watermelons, potatoes and vegetables from the garden, Fresh fruit from the orchard and real meat not full of steroids and antibiotics or wrapped in plastic.

My best friend was an old black dog named Tige with a stub tail. Tige and I went everywhere that a 4 year old was allowed to go. I remember the outhouse at 2am when it was 20 below zero. (If you don't know what an outhouse is, ask your grandparents or Google it.) I remember mattresses filled with corn husks which rustled when you turned over but were oh so warm on those cold Iowa nights. I remember only taking a bath once a week because water had to be heated on a wood burning stove. Once a week baths were plenty when you were a kid.

I also remember a lot of love and good times from those days before television. When we would play parlor games and talk to each other instead of living in our little isolated cocoons of self indulgence.

After my father returned from the war, we moved into the nearest local town so Dad could find work. I was old enough to help with the garden chores and other tasks around the house. Dad would turn the dirt over, Mom and I would plant the seeds, water them and stand back so the plants jumping out of the ground didn't hit us. (Not quite that fast but close)

After my military service, I moved to Colorado in 1968. In 1975, I tried my hand at my first garden in Colorado red clay. What an experience! My carrots went down about 2 inches and up in the air 3 inches. This was the start of a 20 year love hate experience with Colorado dirt. After some professional advice and trial and error, I learned what soil amendments to use, how to mulch the soil to minimize weeds, how to drip irrigation water and grow bountiful harvests of vegetables.

After moving into my condo in 1994, I did not grow anything until 2012. Then the itch to work the dirt and see green growing plants overwhelmed me. I started learning to grow culinary herbs indoors. Since I cook, culinary herbs were an easy choice for me.

My book was a result of my indoor garden journey. Most of the images used in the book were taken by me with my kitchen table as the work and herb stand. My photography skills are still improving.

Included in the book are 15 recipes from my own experience to get the reader started with their culinary delights. ...more
