“How do you do this?” I finally blurted, unable to stop myself.
“Do what?” Jason asked, eyes on the ceiling. I got the feeling he knew what I was asking, but didn’t want to answer.
“Live.” I replied, not really able to find another word for it.
“It’s simple, I don’t.”
I looked over sharply at Jason and he was looking back at me, the autonomous, blank eyes slowly returning.
“I exist. I survive. I endure, but this is not living,” he replied steadily, “the Jason Langman my friends and family knew- that I knew- died a long time ago.”
