I'll be honest—I picked this up expecting it to be pretty good but a bit superficial and ham-handed. Instead, it's one of the best satires that I've read in years, with real heart behind it too. Kuang's anger about the winner takes all nature of publ ...more

" "There ain't nobody in the world like book people."

It's a bit embarrassing to admit how emotional this book made me. I'm not even a fan of Zevin's work; I quite liked the concept behind Elsewhere but not the execution, and I pretty much hated All" Read more of this review »

Land by Maggie O'Farrell
"Oh my Maggie O’Farrell. You’ve done it again. The best book I’ve read this year, and longer than that.

Ps. The magical realism - or spiritual historic - elements are not something I would usually like, but, chefs kiss they were perfectly done here and" Read more of this review »

I would say that this lived up to the hype. This book is brimming with originality and brilliance and an inspiring passion for games and stories, and I was totally invested in Sam and Sadie individually and in their relationship.

Priestdaddy by Patricia Lockwood
"I liked this book so much and found it a lot more accessible than Lockwood's last poetry collection (Motherland Fatherland Homelandsexuals) which baffled me (except "Rape Joke," of course; "Rape Joke" is caustic). Yes, some pieces in this book might " Read more of this review »

“Cynicism is what passes for insight among the mediocre.”
Joe Klein, Primary Colors

E.B. White
“If the world were merely seductive, that would be easy. If it were merely challenging, that would be no problem. But I arise in the morning torn between a desire to improve the world and a desire to enjoy the world. This makes it hard to plan the day.”
E.B. White

Elena Ferrante
“Literary truth is not the truth of the biographer or the reporter, it’s not a police report or a sentence handed down by a court. It’s not even the plausibility of a well-constructed narrative. Literary truth is entirely a matter of wording and is directly proportional to the energy that one is able to impress on the sentence. And when it works, there is no stereotype or cliché of popular literature that resists it. It reanimates, revives, subjects everything to its needs.”

TGWTMH is about 40 pages or less, so closer to one of her short stories probably.

If you read it, you'll have to let me know where it falls on the spectrum of the books of hers you've read.
