| There’s early on a description of umami as the taste that is created right before something goes rancid. The placement of this small prose poem makes it seem like Danler is comparing this flavor with the experience of a doomed but passionate love aff ...more | |

"This is sort of like a Young Adult Chick Lit novel with a lot of blowjobs and coke.
Excruciating in parts, it’s SUper gossipy and larded with cringe-worthy moments of intimacy something to the effect of ‘He traced my nipples with his dirty hipster fin" Read more of this review » |

"It's a coming-of-age story, not the one about all the realisations that come with entering your teens, but the more painful and laborious one about becoming an adult, learning to look after yourself. It's the year of your life you learn that you can'"

This is hilarious and heartfelt. I ended up starting Sweetbitter when I was still halfway through this and despite the gaping difference in tone there are some real parallels: the reluctance to give the narrator a name to enhance her everywoman quali ...more |

"I've heard so much about Lauren Groff, so I was excited to read my first of hers after finding it at a Little Free Library. I can see what the hype is about, she is so talented. I didn't love any of these characters, but they were all so nuanced and "

“If the world were merely seductive, that would be easy. If it were merely challenging, that would be no problem. But I arise in the morning torn between a desire to improve the world and a desire to enjoy the world. This makes it hard to plan the day.”

“Literary truth is not the truth of the biographer or the reporter, it’s not a police report or a sentence handed down by a court. It’s not even the plausibility of a well-constructed narrative. Literary truth is entirely a matter of wording and is directly proportional to the energy that one is able to impress on the sentence. And when it works, there is no stereotype or cliché of popular literature that resists it. It reanimates, revives, subjects everything to its needs.”

TGWTMH is about 40 pages or less, so closer to one of her short stories probably.
If you read it, you'll have to let me know where it falls on the spectrum of the books of hers you've read.
