Helen Best Colgan was born on Merasheen Island, Placentia Bay. In February 1945, following the sudden death of their beloved mother, Helen, aged 9, and her younger sister Laura, aged 7, were brought to St. John's and placed in Belevedere Orphange. Her debut book Two Girls From The Bay is Helen's memoir and it addresses the eight years she spent in the orphanage,her fifteen years as a Sister of Mercy,her subsequent leaving the congregation, marrying, and going on to work as an elementary school teacher for 36 years.
