Computing machinery and intelligence by Alan M. Turing
“Let us return for a moment to Lady Lovelace’s objection, which stated that the machine can only do what we tell it to do. One could say that a man can "inject" an idea into the machine, and that it will respond to a certain extent and then drop into quiescence, like a piano string struck by a hammer. Another simile would be an atomic pile of less than critical size: an injected idea is to correspond to a neutron entering the pile from without. Each such neutron will cause a certain disturbance which eventually dies away. If, however, the size of the pile is sufficiently increased, the disturbance caused by such an incoming neutron will very likely go on and on increasing until the whole pile is destroyed. Is there a corresponding phenomenon for minds, and is there one for machines? There does seem to be one for the human mind. The majority of them seem to be "sub critical," i.e. to correspond in this analogy to piles of sub-critical size. An idea presented to such a mind will on avera ...more Alan M. Turing

Computing machinery and intelligence by Alan M. Turing
“I am not very impressed with theological arguments whatever they may be used to support. Such arguments have often been found unsatisfactory in the past. In the time of Galileo it was argued that the texts, 'And the sun stood still... and hasted not to go down about a whole day' (Joshua x. 13) and 'He laid the foundations of the earth, that it should not move at any time' (Psalm cv. 5) were an adequate refutation of the Copernican theory.”

Hi James! Apologies but I just saw your message. Thank you for finding my book interesting & TBRing it. Would be honored if you would one day share your honest review of it on GR, I like improving on my craft & just getting better at what I do in the indie-publishing world. I love your book choices too & over the hectic weekend will be checking out some of your stuff. I am a Catholic Consecrated Virgin (Lay Catholic Nun to put it in crude terms) so I'm technically neither Miss or Mrs, I am Sister Fiza Pathan. But you can just call me Fiza, everyone always does! Happy Reading to you this awesome weekend! Love your rich & varied book choices - they intrigue me! Cheers to you with my coffee cup in hand! :D

Mr. James Good day, Mrs (Ms) Pathan,

Any author that wrote a collection of essays entitled: The Reclusive Writer & Reader of Bandra: Essays is immediately a friend of mine. Needless to say, this tile went on my "want to read" shelf. I'm honored by your friend request. The day has been long, so I'll come to your doorstep at a future date to look over the rest of your books, neatly organized, and placed gently upon, your Indian rosewood bookcase.

Sincerely,
Mr. James

Hi Mangalam sir! Actually my maternal aunt who I was a caregiver for passed away on November the 8th & now my maternal uncle is in the hospital in a critical condition, so I'm busy doing the hospital beat. But I'm still working, will get back to you soon - not to worry! Hope you are having an amazing Christmas - all my love to your family & the little ones! :)

Mangalam Shiva Hello Fiza, How are you? There has been no communication from you. It must be a quite busy schedule for you. Keep in touch.
Shivkumar.

SHIVKUMAR MANGALAM Ms. Fiza, I ordered your short story Until Death Do us Unite.
One more captivating short story by Ms. Fiza. The repulsive and cruel practice of Sati in the 18th and 19th centuries of India, is very well depicted by the author. The readers are carried to these earlier centuries when they read the story. The minute descriptions of the cremation of the dead Thakur, the willingness of the older wife to be burnt along with the deceased husband, the protests by the younger wife Bhurri, are excellent. The climax of the story is---White marrying Black---White marrying Burrie. The language used by the author is down to earth and simple.
But the reader can easily imagine the travails of Hindu widows in those era, whatever justification was given for burning the widows along with the deceased husbands. If one studies deeply about the conditions of widows in India in those distant years, we could understand the atrocities committed against the widows by the people in their families, by the invading kings and their soldiers, and members of the societies. This does not justify the self immolation or forceable burning of the widows along with their dead husbands in the same piers. It is good that the Britis and Indian Governments banned this evil paractice.
Hats of to Ms. Fiza for bringing out the cruelty of those dark periods very vividly. Shivkumar.
