Regina de Búrca grew up in the west of Ireland surrounded by rare books and an eccentric breed of people known as book collectors. Her parents encouraged her to tell stories, thanks to the catalogue of excuses and half-truths that she had gathered by the age of six. They believed she had taken after her great-grandfather; a hopeless case whose only redeeming quality was his ability to tell a good yarn. Regina proved them right with the latter when she wrote her first book aged seven about a talking strawberry named Willis, after a character in the TV show “Diff'rent Strokes”.
