James Roy Sheffield was born in Barking, Essex and spent his adult life as a professional cricketing with Essex County Cricket Club and Wellington Cricket Club in New Zealand, a country to which he moved in 1938.

He was a wicketkeeper and appeared in 180 first-class matches. He also had a short spell playing club cricket with Blackpool Cricket Club.

His literary career hinges on one book, 'Bolivian Spy?' (1935) which tells of his travels in South America in the winter of 1932/33.

He died in Auckland, New Zealand, three days before his 91st birthday.
