Helen Pierce Jacob was born and reared in the northeastern corner of Ohio and lived much of her life in a century-old house exactly like the Strawbridge Place. She and her sister and two brothers spend many hours searching for secrets just as the characters in this book do. She also explored the riverbank, climbed trees, jumped in the haymow, sneaked across the forbidden trestle, attended church, went to Lake Erie for picnics and swimming, read, kept journals, and had a horse.

Mrs. Jacob attended school and college in Ohio, and was a school and college librarian much of her life. She and her husband lived in the Washington, DC area.
