During the global pandemic lockdown in 2020, some of us took up painting, others yoga, others sewed masks. Some of us learned to make craft cocktails, some of us drank too much, some unlucky ones suffered severe loneliness and the loss of people they loved. (I lost my mother and a good friend.) Our family made a watched at least one movie every day after Zoom School.

Gabe Fowler, proprietor of the legendary Brooklyn comics shop Desert Island, moved to an isolated cabin in the woods of New England (presumably an actual desert island was too difficult to get to) and sent out requests for original comics about the pandemic. (“We all need something positive to think about, and a lot of us have time on our hands. Who wants to make something?”) The result is the magical and magnificent anthology Rescue Party: A Graphic Anthology of COVID Lockdown, a collection of what could be imagined as one-page messages for bottles to be sent out into the strangely transformed world of Covid-19.

Some Strapazin readers may recall Comix 2000 which, prior to Rescue Party, must have been the most celebrated “occasional comics anthology”—“occasional” as in “meant to mark an event.” Comix 2000 was a two-thousand-page black-and-white collection of silent comics from around the world, pulled together to celebrate the turn of the millennium. Rescue Party is a more modest 150 or so pages, and while it doesn’t feature submissions from quite as many countries, it is in wildly vibrant full color—paints, crayons, collages, computer artwork, and who knows what other media—essentially a different medium from the way most comics from the last century were presented.

Rescue Party is also a book chock full of optimism. Fowler’s guidelines were simple: submissions were to be a single page in a classic 9-panel grid and should share hopes and dreams for a return to “normal life” post-pandemic. The results (or at least the 150 or so Fowler curated from more than 250 submissions from more than 50 countries) overflow with positivity, kindness, and caring. The pandemic brought out the worst in many people—from pettiness to selfishness to meanness—exacerbated by a mass migration to the generally toxic medium of social media, but there’s none of that here. Indeed, while Fowler’s request went out via Instagram, few of these stories even mention the internet. And the result not a Facebook group or website, but a celebration of our humanity through that most human and humane medium, the book.

Rescue Party is also a time capsule of the state of comics at the 1/5 marker of the 21st Century. I consider myself comics-literate, yet I’d only even heard of three of the 140 contributors. In fact, many of the contributors are previously unpublished amateurs. That shows how comics have become a truly universal medium and how good Desert Island is at finding new talent.

In one of the text sections in the book, Fowler observes that Covid put us “together in our isolation.” Nobody alive had every experienced anything like what the entire world crashed into. God willing, none of us ever will again—but if we do, Rescue Party can serve as an inspiration to tap into the creativity and compassion our fickle species is capable of. ...more

Quick: Name your favorite Balkan cartoonists. Leaving aside those best known for their work in superheroes and the mainstream, I can only come up with a few. Serbian Saša Kakezić (Aleksandar Zograf), of course, with his fantastic dream comics; the tremendously underrated Croatian designer, animator, and graphic novelist Helena Klakočar; and, if we are willing to include Slovenia in “the Balkans,” the marvellously inventive “Stripburger” collective.

There’s a new name now, at least for those of us in the West: Miroslav Sekulić-Struja, whose Petar & Liza must be added to any list of the most remarkable graphic novels of the last decade. Sekulić-Struja was born in Croatia but has spent periods of time in France, including two residencies at the Maison des Auteurs in Angoulême, and his work hints at a wide range of European influences.

Other than calling Petar & Liza unusual and heartbreakingly gorgeous, I come up short for words when trying to describe it. To me the book felt almost like some new form: a synthesis of fiction, comics, painting, and cinema. Petar, former soldier, melancholic dreamer, poet and writer, holder of many odd jobs, walks in shoes whose laces are always coming untied, expressively hinting at his interior state. After leaving military service Petar becomes disillusioned and lost (“my life, a rudderless boat”) until he meets Liza (watch for her beautiful green eyes), a fiercely optimistic ballet dancer and lover of disaster films. Their relationship ends up transforming their lives, though a critical question persists: while Petar has an almost magical ability to fix anything mechanical, can he fix his own life?

Like many rich works of art, Petar & Liza will affect different readers in different ways. It put me in mind of novels—such as Kundera’s The Unbearable Lightness of Being and Hrabal’s I Served the Kind of England—but even more so film. Dušan Makavejev for sure, and others released when I was Petar’s age, such as 37°2 le matin and Der Himmel über Berlin: emotional movies that resonated with my attempts to make sense of life during a period of post-adolescent transformation. Beyond the normal emotional chaos of youth, Petar and Liza are also part of that “lost generation” of 1990’s former Yugoslavia, attempting to find both survival and meaning in the squalid mental and social turmoil following the war.

Petar & Liza is a visual tour-de-force, painted entirely in gouache in mesmerizing detail. There's certainly a folk-art feel, and different readers may see other things: at various points I was put in mind of Breughel (especially in some of the crowd tableaus), Magritte, Beckmann, and from comics perhaps a dash of Jacques de Loustal and Edmond Baudoin. Along with the vivid paintings and cinematic layouts and pacing, the narration shifts among points of view of different people who know Petar, keeping the reader off balance while creating a sort of oral history told via a visual kaleidoscope.

I missed the original 2022 French edition of Petar & Liza published by Actes Sud. I was tipped off to this Fantagraphics translation by Chris Ware, with whom I had a few lovely conversations at the Hamburg “Graphic Novel Days” this past March. I am slightly embarrassed to admit that I had put off reading Impossible People: A Completely Average Recovery Story for a long time, despite how much positive buzz the book was getting, simply because I really disliked how author Julia Wertz drew herself as the book’s main character

It was a different book by Wertz, Tenements, Towers & Trash: An Unconventional Illustrated History of New York City, that pulled me to her work. TT&T, a sort-of history sort-of visual tour, might best be described as a visual love letter to NYC, one drawn in an almost obsessively detailed style that would be messy or claustrophobic if it weren’t so beautiful. TT&T has joined my shelf of favorite books about my adopted city of three decades, alongside classics such as Michael Henry Adams’s Harlem: Lost and Found, Luc Sante’s Lowlife, and Anatole Broyard’s Kafka Was the Rage.

So, I gave Impossible People a try, with its cover illustration of that somehow off-putting author in her studio, drawn in that same beautifully cluttered style which calls to my mind a response to Hergé or Jason Lutes. This graphic novel is a hefty 300-page hardcover brick, but the interior style is much simpler than TT&T—mostly conversations in simple or even blank backgrounds. Wertz does tease us with the occasional streetscape, including virtuoso full-page performances like pages 57, 111, 223, or 311-312 which could serve as perfect visual records of the neighborhoods they depict.

But NYC isn’t the subject matter of Impossible People—rather, that would be a single “impossible person,” the author herself. In this graphic memoir Wertz charts a fits-and-starts five-year journey through alcoholism and unhappiness to sobriety and guarded optimism. The book is brutally honest while at times uproariously funny, and full of awkward lapses, more awkward relationships, career frustrations, and uncomfortably familiar family dysfunctionalities. It’s one of the more engaging and effective memoirs I’ve ever read, in comics form or any other. Indeed, I’d put it on par with some of the GN greats: David B., Pekar, Satrapi, Spiegelman. And unlike many addiction memoirs which chart a clear path from disaster to recovery, Impossible People feels more like real life: non-linear, messy, and full of unexpected turns and dubious decisions.

The critic Gertrude Stein famously told Ernest Hemingway “Write about what you know”—advice that led to a handful of novels which changed the course of American literature. In Impossible People Wertz has created a memoir based on what she knows, and it’s so much better than most of the vast field of autobiographical comics because she has something interesting and insightful to say and tells it so well … not just visually but with a mature grasp of storytelling.

Since reading Impossible People I’ve made a point to watch some video interviews of Julia Wertz, who comes across as much more likable, attractive, well put-together, and articulate than she presents herself in this book. I discovered the work of Maurice Vellekoop back in late 1980s on the margins of the nascent Toronto independent comics scene when he was employed by REACTOR Art and Design Studio as a graphic designer and illustrator but spinning out comics on the side. I got my hands on his early zines “Fear Comics” and “Guilt Comics” and was immediately struck by his whimsical but confident line and ability to capture perfect facial expressions with just a few marks. While not exactly similar to artists such as Sempé or the classic New Yorker gag cartoon crowd, he showed that same prodigious gift of doing so much with so little. Soon thereafter Vellekoop started contributing to the first Drawn and Quarterly series, the magazine-sized one. As he gained more visibility Vellekoop was lauded for his “undeniably celebratory queerness.” I always felt that description unfairly limited him: quite simply, he's a hell of a cartoonist.

As the last century closed and the new one opened, Vellekoop forged a rich career as a graphic artist and illustrator, with many stunning posters and advertisements to his credit, and powerhouse clients such as Time, The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, and The New York Times. While he did stay (somewhat) active in sequential narrative, including a few brief sort-of comics like his ABC: A Homoerotic Primer, it was certainly not to the degree that this fan would have liked: a strip in Vogue here, another appearance in D&Q there, and even a comic in Details. (Yes, I shamefully admit I was a subscriber back in the day.)

I always believed (or hoped) Vellekoop had a full-length graphic novel in him. I just never expected we’d have to wait more than three decades for it.

It was worth the wait.

I’m So Glad We Had This Time Together is a mature, funny, poignant, sophisticated tour-de-force of a graphic novel, clocking in at nearly 500 pages. Vellekoop turned 60 this year, and this book was as unexpected and miraculous as Emil Ferris’s 400-page debut graphic novel My Favorite Thing Is Monsters when she was 55. (And that was only Volume 1—her Volume 2 just came out. Dare we hope for a trend from middle-aged cartoonists?)

To be fair, the core story in I’m So Glad, a gay coming-of-age tale, is not terribly novel: Vellekoop was raised in a strict and conservative Christian home and had difficult (though ultimately loving) relationships with both his father and mother. As he tells it, his struggles with his sexuality were mirrored by his indecision about whether he had enough talent to become a professional artist. But the way Vellekoop tells this story is exquisite and exquisitely beautiful to look at. He draws us into his complex psyche. He demonstrates how important Disney, Broadway musicals, and film were in forming how he sees the world and himself. He introduces us to a wide range of friends and lovers with their own complicated lives and desires; these characters are fully fleshed out, and it’s genuinely heart-rending to read about one of them dying.

In spite of the effortless grace of the book’s painted pages, nothing comes easy for Maurice the narrator in I’m So Glad. Straight and gay, friends and foes, life and work, black and white--none of it is at all … black-and-white. Vellekoop does not come across as a particularly sensual person in terms of his social relationships—apparently all of those instincts go into his work—and some of the most affecting scenes are when he tries (mostly unsuccessfully) to navigate with authenticity uninhibited gay culture. I felt that the real strength of his story is less that it’s a coming-out tale and more that it’s an honest and insightful study of how each of us may struggle in deciding if and how to choose a partner for life.

Reading between the lines and picking up some clues, it seems Vellekoop is a reader of great literature and he clearly knows how to tell a great story. While reading I’m So Glad I found myself thinking that I’d probably enjoy his story even if it had been a standard prose memoir.
