“The earliest expression of an artistic sense in our region is very likely to have been the one visible on rocks in the 'heart of India' -- an expression coined by a geographer to describe the rocky area of hills and plateaus between the Gangetic plains and the Deccan. This hilly landscape is spectacular. It comprises long finger-like ridges and jaw-dropping rock formations, and masses of scarped plateaus dotted with rock shelters, often to be found in the midst of scattered jungles and grasslands. This stretch was once home to prehistoric inhabitants living remarkably basic lives.”
