Chris Lemig spent twenty-three years of his life in the closet of addiction and self-hatred. After coming out as being gay in 2007, he discovered the teachings of the Buddha and never looked back. He is the author of The Narrow Way: A Memoir of Coming Out, Getting Clean and Finding Buddha. Chris is currently writing his first fiction novel and studying Tibetan language.

Dream about Pumpkin

Pretty confused as to why you saw a vegetable in your dream and that, too, a pumpkin. Does dreaming about pumpkin have any significance, and do dreams about this fat vegetable have any importance? Such dreams are usually associated with lighter significances in life. There is typically a positive meaning related to dreaming about pumpkins. […]

“Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it, no matter if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense. ~ The Buddha”
Chris Lemig, Narrow Way: A Memoir Of Coming Out, Getting Clean and Finding Buddha

“The message is now seared in my mind: To tell the truth is to lie; to lie is to tell the truth.”
Chris Lemig, Narrow Way: A Memoir Of Coming Out, Getting Clean and Finding Buddha

“This is the road of the long slow decline. You know it well. You who have watched helpless as son, daughter, sister, brother, husband, wife, friend stood uncertain at its crossroads before taking that single decisive step. Maybe you took that step yourself. Either way, you know that there is no getting off of this road until the traveler has reached its inevitable end. The road twists and winds and goes on into an unseen, distant horizon. Sometimes there are breakdowns. Sometimes there is hope. Sometimes the ones we love crash and die. There may be rest stops along the way on this road, side trips into what looks like happiness or sanity. But these are only mirages that shimmer and dissolve when we reach out to grab them. They are not real life or real rest stops. In the end, the traveler must figure out why he got on the road in the first place before making that final choice to get off.”
Chris Lemig, Narrow Way: A Memoir Of Coming Out, Getting Clean and Finding Buddha

“Let your heart be at peace.
Watch the turmoil of beings
but contemplate their return.

If you don't realize the source,
you stumble in confusion and sorrow.
When you realize where you come from,
you naturally become tolerant,
disinterested, amused,
kindhearted as a grandmother,
dignified as a king.
Immersed in the wonder of the Tao,
you can deal with whatever life brings you,
And when death comes, you are ready.”
Chuang Tzu

“My people are few. They resemble the scattering trees of a storm-swept plain...There was a time when our people covered the land as the waves of a wind-ruffled sea cover its shell-paved floor, but that time long since passed away with the greatness of tribes that are now but a mournful memory.”
Chief Seattle, Chief Seattle's Speech (1854)

“I celebrate myself, and sing myself,
And what I assume you shall assume,
For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you.

I loafe and invite my soul,
I lean and loafe at my ease observing a spear of summer grass.

32. I think I could turn and live with animals, they're so placid and self-contained,
I stand and look at them and long.

They do not sweat and whine about their condition.
They do not lie awake in the dark and weep for their sins.
They do not make me sick discussiong their duty to God,
Not one is dissatisfied, not one is demented with the mania of owning things,
Not one kneels to another, nor to his kind that lived thousands of years ago,
Not one is respectable or unhappy over the earth.

52. The spotted hawk swoops by and accuses me, he complains of my gab and loitering.

I too am not a bit tamed, I too am untranslatable,
I sound my barbaric YAWP over the roofs of the world.”
Walt Whitman, Song of Myself

“If you can, help others; if you cannot do that, at least do not harm them.”
Dalai Lama XIV

“One of the few things I know about writing is this: spend it all, shoot it, play it, lose it, all, right away, every time...give it, give it all, give it now.”
Annie Dillard
