I don't mind that Scalzi's work may be "mind-candy, mostly." As you can see by my reading list, I do read a lot of mind-candy. Thanks, I'll try Redshirts as well!

Honestly, that kind of surprises me. I see Scalzi as mind-candy, mostly. His Old Man's War series is enjoyable, but I don't see a lot of depth or substance to it. I guess I figured you'd want a little more weight to your reading.But if you've any love for Star Trek, his Redshirts novel is a fun journey.
