Ian Hassall was born in England and went to Northern Rhodesia in 1951 aged four. Ian’s parents decided to emigrate to this land of milk and honey (for whites). His father’s first job was with a construction firm near the Congo border, literally carving a town out of the bush. The family lived in a hut and Ian can still remember being excited by the primitive conditions and wildlife. Then his father gained employment on a Copper Mine as a fitter and turner. The story of the rest of Ian Hassall’s youth, in Mufulira, Ndola, Harare and Grahamstown is told in his book, Hamba Gashle. He came to England in the early 1970s as a foreigner. Now he lives a lazy retired life in the north of England with his second wife, still dreaming of Africa.

Hamba Gashle is written as a diary, by a boy first aged 4 ending when he is aged 20. It is totally unmediated by the author's adult viewpoint so you get the young person's firsthand view of the world including naive misunderstanding, daydreams and so on. I believe it gives you a sharper view of things.

Available as an ebook from most distributors like Amazon. The Kobo link doesn't work directly bec Read more of this blog post »
