François Sully was a French journalist, photographer and author who was one of the longest-serving journalists to cover the wars in Indo-China during the latter half of the 20th century. He spent nearly 24 years in Indo-China, and at the time of his death in 1971 he was viewed as the "dean" of the Saigon press corps.
Sully was born in France, joined the Résistance as a teenager, and was wounded on his seventeenth birthday while engaging in combat with German forces during the liberation of Paris. As soon as he had sufficiently recovered, he enlisted in the French Army, fought in Germany, then volunteered for service with the Corps Expéditionnaire Français en Extrême-Orient, arriving in Saigon in late 1945. Sully was born in France, joined the Résistance as a teenager, and was wounded on his seventeenth birthday while engaging in combat with German forces during the liberation of Paris. As soon as he had sufficiently recovered, he enlisted in the French Army, fought in Germany, then volunteered for service with the Corps Expéditionnaire Français en Extrême-Orient, arriving in Saigon in late 1945. When his enlistment was up two years later, Sully chose to be discharged in Saigon. In 1947 he joined 'Indochine Sud-Est Asiatique', then one of the leading French-language magazines outside metropolitan France, for which he worked until 1953. He then worked for a time as a free-lance journalist, covering the battle of Dien Bien Phu for Time-Life. In 1959 he joined United Press International (UPI). He also wrote occasional articles for Time magazine, and his photographs were carried by the Black Star agency, until he joined Newsweek in early 1961.

In March 1962, Sully was to be expelled from South Vietnam along with Homer Bigart of the New York Times. The expulsion was intended to serve as a warning to all journalists who reported the truth about the war against the Viet Cong. The Vietnamese government eventually backed down, but only after the intervention of the U.S. Mission, personnel of which explained that the expulsion of journalists would only worsen an already bad relationship with the press. Five months later, however, M. Sully was in fact expelled. Newsweek's issue of August 20, 1962 had carried an article under Sully's by-line entitled 'Viet Nam: The Unpleasant Truth', which had caused extreme displeasure within the top level of the Vietnamese government. M. Sully departed Saigon on September 9, with most of his competitors and colleagues in the Saigon press corps at the airfield to see him off as a show of solidarity. After his expulsion from the Republic of Viet Nam, Sully proceeded to Harvard where he spent a year at the Nieman Foundation working on South-East Asian nations other than Viet Nam. He returned to the Newsweek bureau in Saigon after the November 1963 Coup and assassination of Ngô Đình Diệm.
During his tenure as Newsweek's Bureau Chief in Saigon, Sully also wrote occasional pieces for other magazines including The Nation and The New Republic. During 1967-68, Sully wrote articles for McGraw-Hill's business reporting service, World News, which in turn distributed them to Business Week, Medical World News, Engineering News Record, and other publications. In addition to writing news stories, taking photographs and managing a large and busy news operation, Sully wrote and edited both his books while working as Newsweek's Bureau Chief in Saigon. François Sully died in February 1971, when the command helicopter of General Do Cao Tri, in which Sully was riding, burst into flames while approaching a fire-base just over the Cambodian border near Tây Ninh, Viet Nam. All the other passengers and crew died in the fiery crash, but M. Sully jumped from the flaming aircraft and fell roughly seventy-five feet to the ground; he died some time later at Long Binh hospital, from injuries received in the fall. ...more
