Dopo lunghi anni dedicati alla fotografia, al teatro e alla realizzazione di numerosi documentari, esordisce appena trentenne nella regia cinematografica con il film Il Camorrista del quale firma la sceneggiatura insieme a Massimo De Rita.

Ma è nel 1989 che si impone all’attenzione del cinema internazionale con Nuovo cinema Paradiso, il film di cui è soggettista e sceneggiatore che gli varrà l’Oscar come migliore film straniero. Da allora i film di Tornatore sono stati regolarmente distribuiti in tutto il mondo riscuotendo premi e successo. Tra gli attori più noti che hanno preso parte ai suoi film ricordiamo: Ben Gazzarra, Marcello Mastroianni, Michele Morgan, Sergio Castellitto, Philippe Noiret, Tim Roth, Gérard Depardieau, Roman Polanski, ...more
