While I do think this novel had an interesting premise, I unfortunately do not think the execution of that premise was done very well.

There were some good parts…but the “reveal” of who/what was behind everything going on felt a bit goofy to me, honestly. I lowkey feel like this book is the literary equivalent of a bad horror movie on Netflix. Idk why exactly, but it was just something about the vibe of this book that screamed “shitty Netflix movie material” to me, lol.

I thought the pacing of the story was a bit strange, too. A lot happens…kind of…but most of it takes place over the course of, like, less than a day. And apart from the epilogue, I’m pretty sure the entire novel takes place over the course of maybe 5 days at most. Possibly less. I just found that a bit odd.

There’s a romance subplot thrown in with very little setup, and I can kind of tell that the author was trying to do something with it, but tbh I just couldn’t bring myself to care, since overall I didn’t care much about any of the characters. Which, speaking of that…

The MC’s only 2 personality traits are that she’s Super Anxious all the time and Chronically Online. Her online bestie (who she obviously has a crush on), did not have any discernible personality traits that I could find outside of the shallowest ones, such as being a Gamer and being Nice to the MC. That’s…that’s literally it. The MC seems pretty enamored with her friend, but even by the end of the story I couldn’t really figure out why. Like, I just never felt like there was any real chemistry between them. But maybe that’s just me.

My biggest issue with this book was the reveal about the supernatural stuff going on. It really just felt super goofy to me. Like, despite the horror elements of this novel (which I did not find to be scary in the slightest), I lowkey felt like I was watching an episode of Scooby-Doo, specifically at the part where the gang unmasks the scary monster and it turns out to be some regular dude in a suit. The supernatural element of this book was so lame that it felt like that to me. I couldn’t take it seriously and tbh I don’t think it makes much sense either, when you really think about the lore the author was trying to set up.

Again, I can kind of see what the author was going for…I think…but it just fell so flat for me that I ended up being super disappointed with the explanation for what was happening. And it didn’t help that I never felt any particular way for the streamer characters who were being affected by what was going on. Like, they all felt so one-dimensional that I didn’t really care if they died or not.

Maybe that was the point…? I’m not sure.

But I can think of several ways this concept could’ve been done differently, and I think any of them would’ve made the story considerably better.

Anyway, I rated it 2 stars because it’s not the worst thing I’ve ever read, but I still didn’t like it. And the premise was interesting, even if the payoff ended up being a huge letdown. ...more

I thought this was a very cute, heartwarming historical fantasy (? unsure if that’s the proper genre title for this book) romance. The cast of characters Benny meets and quickly befriends are all very endearing, and I was honestly surprised by how much I grew to like them all.

I do wish there had been a bit more focus on the actual romance between Benny and Río, but what we did get to see of it was very sweet, and I appreciate how their relationship developed over the span of a couple months, rather than it seeming like insta-lust.

And, on the topic of that, I was a little surprised to discover how non-spicy the romance in this story is. Which, personally, I generally do prefer. But I’m just used to adult romances usually have some level of spice in them. But this book is very mild when it comes to that aspect of it, which I found to be a bit refreshing.

That being said, I am a bit confused about why this novel was adult instead of YA. I don’t really see a reason why Benny couldn’t have just been 18 instead of 22. In my opinion, I don’t think there’s anything in this story that would be inappropriate for a teenager to read. The cursing is pretty mild (I think “fuck” is only used maybe 2 or 3 times, and the other swear words are pretty mild). There are some time-period-based slurs used, but nothing that I think would be inappropriate for younger readers.

In some ways, I don’t feel like the romance was the main subject of this story, and I’m assuming that’s intentional. Like, don’t misunderstand me, I did enjoy the romance aspects of it, but it almost felt like kind of a side plot until, like, 60%-70% of the way through the book. And then basically immediately after Benny and Río admit their feelings for each other, something happens (which I won’t say since it’s a spoiler) that significantly ramp up the stakes of the story and make the romance between them take a backseat until almost the end of the book.

Like, because of everything else the characters suddenly have to deal with, there isn’t really time for the narrative to focus on building up the romance anymore. So, really all you get of it, until near the very end, are the earlier parts of the book, where Benny and Río are working toward becoming friends for a good portion of it before you finally get the scene of them admitting their feelings for each other.

It’s kind of difficult to explain what I mean without getting into specific plot points, which would be spoilers, but overall I just wish the romance had been a bit more prominent in the narrative. Maybe just a scene or two more to show how their relationship develops further after that initial admittance of their feelings for one another.

But I still enjoyed the story, for sure, and I would definitely recommend it if you like MM romances in historical settings with some type of fantasy element. Also, if you prefer romances with very mild spice, then I would also recommend this book to you. ...more
