“Granda took a seat beside her, placing a warm hand on Gloria’s.
“How ya feelin’, Gloria honey?”
Gloria shrugged to minimize the emotions warring within her.
“I’ll be fine. Once I get on my feet—” she broke off, unable to continue. Her lip quivered and the tears that had been threatening to
overflow suddenly did. “Oh, Granda,” she sobbed, burying her face
in her hands.
Granda’s soft arms cradled her and she whispered soothing
words as she rocked her just like a child. “That’s alright, baby, ya jest

hope. Life ain’t all bad; ya jest gotta keep faith that the Good Lord
knows what He’s up to.”
