I recently read Theo Baker’s How to Rule the World, a good portion of which is devoted to how a freshman journalist received tips that allowed him to expose research misconduct by Stanford’s neuroscientist president (Marc Tessier-Lavigne), leading to his resignation.

Bazerman, a Harvard economist who studies decision-making and ethics, focuses on two superstars of behavioral ethics, Francesca Gino (Harvard) and Dan Ariely (Duke), who had joined their data in a groundbreaking paper offering a new hack for making people report information more honestly. Bazerman was one of the five co-authors of that paper, but had no involvement in the data fabrications (his contributions were conceptual and theoretical, so he wasn’t accused of any wrongdoing). In his book, Bazerman offers a detailed account of the events prior to the paper’s publication in 2012 and afterward.

Gino and Ariely had extensive collaborations. Ironically, some of their work argued that creativity and dishonesty often go hand in hand. The paper in question boosted the prestige of its authors, including Bazerman, but its eventual retraction and the resulting bad publicity, after a series of replication failures gave rise to suspicions of wrongdoing, damaged their reputations. Manipulation of data from both researchers was later confirmed through forensic studies on their data. Both researchers eventually conceded that their results had been manipulated, but continue to maintain their innocence.

The scandal sent shockwaves through the field of behavioral economics and psychology. It led to increased scrutiny of how behavioral scientists collect, store, and share their raw data, highlighting the vulnerability of the field to scientific fraud. Bazerman’s motivations in writing the book were to set the record straight and to restore his and others’ damaged reputations. The writing is clear but rather overwhelming for the lay reader. Academics like me may find the book of greater interest and relevance. They may thus forgive the extremely detailed and somewhat dry explanations. ...more

What’s new here is that the book/film does not depict loneliness in space but a genuine connection between a human and an alien life form that looks completely different from what we are used to seeing in other sci-fi space tales. The author dedicates his book to John, Paul, George, and Ringo.

The story begins with the protagonist, Ryland Grace, stretched on a bed, being handled by a robotic arm and asked simple questions by a computer. As he gradually regains his senses, he starts wondering about his whereabouts and how he got into this lab-like environment. He doesn’t remember his name or what he did for a living. Eventually, he remembers enough physics and finds a measuring tape and a stopwatch, which he uses to determine that the force of gravity at his current location is 1.5 times that of Earth. “I’m not on Earth,” he says to himself.

Software-engineer-turned-sci-fi-writer Andy Weir concocts a tale in which Astrophage, a space-faring, single-celled organism that feeds on stellar energy, is dimming the Sun and other stars, with only one exception. So, an interstellar mission is sent to determine whether a fast-approaching ice age, with certain extinction within 30 years, can be avoided. At least one alien civilization is also investigating, which leads to an inter-species cooperation toward the shared goal.

A main theme of the story is a friendship between Grace and a rock-like alien engineer, which he nicknames “Rocky.” Though quite different from Grace (it has an octopus-like appearance with 5 arms, no vision, and communicating via sounds & musical notes), Rocky helps with the discovery that a nearby planet is home to Taumoeba, an organism that preys on Astrophage. The scientist-engineer team then uses selective breeding to produce Taumoeba that can survive on both Venus and Rocky’s environs. The ending, which entails the saving of the universe from doomsday, offers several twists and turns that lead to an unexpected final outcome for Grace. ...more

This book, which contains material on both sides of the AI debate, is rather unusual from the very beginning. On the cover, the author is identified as "Farzad." There's no copyright page, and no publisher is listed. On the back cover, the author is described as a "content creator and investor focused on the convergence of AI, robotics, and energy," providing no academic background. On LinkedIn, Mesbahi (@farzyness on X) introduces himself as Ex-Tesla Program Manager and full-time creator, with a 2009 bachelor's degree in mathematics from Penn State.

Also on the back cover, we read: "We're standing at a civilization fork in the road. The path we take over the next decade leads to one of two destinations--abundance or collapse. There is no comfortable middle ground. The book is about which path we take. And more importantly, how you can position yourself to thrive regardless of which way the wind blows." The blurb goes on to describe AI, robotics, and energy, not as three separate revolutions, but as pieces of an interconnected system, with each piece amplifying the other two in ways that we've not seen in human history.

The book's 12 chapters are structured in three parts.

Part I: What's Coming (the convergence, self-driving cars, Optimus, energy abundance)

Part II: The Stakes (the barbell, innovator's dilemma, US vs China, government's role, the transition)

Part III: What to Do (investment framework, data moat principle, your roadmap)

In the book's epilogue, which the author characterizes as "the honest summary of everything in the book," we are warned that our current enthusiasm for AI & robotics may prove to be wishful thinking. Nuclear energy was supposed to make energy too cheap to meter. The Internet was supposed to eliminate all middlemen (instead, it created Amazon & Google, the biggest middlemen in history). The author then goes on to assert that the age of abundance is coming. "The people who thrive in abundance will be the ones who have cultivated interests and purpose that do not depend on paychecks. The people who build because they want to, not because they have to. The people who find meaning in creation rather than consumption." [p. 207]

I always tell my students that they cannot write about science & technology without using figures, charts, and/or tables. Nothing with any technical or logical depth can be conveyed without illustrations or data. This book has none of these elements. ...more
