The book, about the stock market crash of 1929 and the ensuing Great Depression of 1929-1939, is structured like a diary. Its 42 chapter titles are dates, ranging from February 1, 1929 to June 21, 1933. The book’s narrative extends to 1933, which was the peak of the Great Depression, with unemployment rate at ~25%, industrial production cut in half, a 30% drop in GDP, a consumer price deflation of 25%, a 32% drop in wholesale prices, and thousands of failed banks.

The stock market crash of 1929 did not have to lead to a major depression. There was a budget surplus in 1929. The Great Depression happened because of a series of policy decisions, which Sorkin elaborates upon in this excellent book. Markets were not regulated in the 1920s and investors had scant information about companies whose stocks they were buying. Investors were essentially in the dark about what Benjamin Graham, author of The Intelligent Investor, calls a stock’s fundamental value.

The Securities and Exchange Commission was formed later, when FDR signed the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 into law. Yet, problems arising from inadequate oversight reared their ugly heads in the crash of 2008, which is the subject of the previous Sorkin best-seller, Too Big to Fail.

Sorkin does not cover only economic and financial aspects of the 1929 crash but also devotes a significant part of his narrative to key human players and their relationships.

Comparing the situation in the 2020s with what was going on in the 1920s is instructive. A century ago, investors were upbeat about the country’s future in general and the stock market in particular, not imagining the troubles ahead. The same optimism exists today, except that the government is running trillion-dollar deficits and spends more than 15% of its budget on servicing the national debt. Huge deficits, a GDP-level national debt, and the fact that many more people are invested, directly or indirectly, in the market are bound to exacerbate any significant downturn.

For readers who do not want to spend a great deal of time on reading a lengthy book, Sorkin introduces 1929 in this 63-minute book talk on YouTube.

Sorkin’s Too Big to Fail consists of 20 numbered chapters, sandwiched between a prologue and an epilogue. A new afterword, reflecting on the 10th anniversary of the 2008 near-collapse of the US financial system, has been added to the original 2009 best-seller. The book has been made into a 2011 Sorkin-co-produced HBO film.

Sorkin opines that, metaphorically, the deadly dinosaurs (investor bankers) of Wall Street’s Jurassic Park were headed for extinction. Of course, no such extinction materialized and the beasts are still roaming in our markets. Some of the biggest financial firms in the US failed or went to the brink of extinction, only to re-emerge to follow many of the same practices that devastated our economy. And they seem to be doing better than ever! Sorkin offers a step-by-step account of the financial crisis he uncovered based on hundreds of hours of interviews with 200 people, raking in billions and flying in private jets.

The main drama begins on March 17, 2008, when Dick Fuld, Chief of Lehman Brothers, was summoned back from an India trip by treasury secretary Hank Paulson, because of the collapse of Bear Stearns. The turmoil ends six months later, when Paulson announced that the US government will bail out the banks. Sorkin tells us not only about the financial crisis but also about key players and their web of connections. In fact, Sorkin himself has been accused of being too cozy with some of the players.

According to Sorkin, by the time the crisis ended, “The idea that financial wizards had conjured up a new era of low-risk profits, and that American-style financial engineering was the global gold standard, was officially dead.” Except that Sorkin announced the deaths prematurely. Those “financial wizards” are still very much alive and are in positions to cause further damage to our economy. For example, Graham states early and often that speculation is a road to ruin while investment can make you rich over the long term. Ditto for the statement, which has become an adage by now, that investing in a mix of stocks, as reflected in an index fund, is a much safer bet that trying to pick winning stocks.

Over the decades, many strategies for succeeding in the stock market have been promoted. Nearly all these strategies proved to be fads that collapsed sooner or later. Here are some of Graham’s common-sensical recommendations:

- Establish a rational framework for making decisions.

- Prevent your and others’ emotions from interfering with your framework.

- As a piece of ownership in a business, a stock has a fundamental value.

- A stock’s fundamental value may not be the same as its price.

- Buy stocks like you buy groceries not like you buy perfume.

- The market has mood swings. Buy from pessimists and sell to optimists.

- Keep a margin of safety. Don’t get carried away and overpay for a stock.

- Be a defensive rather than aggressive investor.

Investors look at a stock’s fundamental value, independent of its price. Speculators go with the flow, trading on market movements of the price. The two groups pursue opposite strategies: Investors buy when the market is down; speculators are swayed by popular opinion, buying when stock prices are on the rise. Speculators love bull markets. Investors dread bull markets, which make everything overpriced.

Unfortunately. Considering the fundamental value of a stock is easier said than done. The typical lay investor is poorly equipped to deduce the fundamental value from publicly available data that have passed through various optimistic and pessimistic filters. This is why insider information is so valued. Such information can be used to craft winning strategies by those on the inside.
