A hybrid of memoir and social commentary, this book traces the history of “the double,” including the author’s own experiences of being confused with fellow author Naomi Wolf, and, occasionally, with supermodel Naomi Campbell. She uses this relatively innocent confusion, as well as the oft-sinister alternative personas created by AI deep fakes, as a framework for exploring political polarization, the rise of far-right, conspiracy theories, and how digital culture warps our sense of reality.

Klein writes at length about people confusing her with Naomi Wolf, the former liberal and third-wave feminist who had much overlap in her views and political identity with Klein, a self-described third-generation leftist. Confusing two liberal, Jewish Naomis is somewhat understandable. But Wolf subsequently pivoted into a popular right-wing conspiracy theorist, and that’s when trouble started. Wolf gained notoriety when she became an avid opponent of mask and vaccine mandated during the COVID-19 pandemic and became a regular guest on right-wing talk shows. Wolf’s libertarian views (opposition to censorship, surveillance, and erosion of constitutional rights) still align with Klein’s, but Wolf endorsed Donald Trump and praised the GOP for “inclusivity.”

Attributing Wolf’s opinions to Klein got to a point that when Wolf would say something outlandish or promote a silly conspiracy theory, people would tweet “Thoughts and prayers to Naomi Klein.” It was agonizing for Klein, a serious author with The Shock Doctrine to her credit, to be confused with someone “who can’t seem to tell the difference between temporary public health measures and a coup d’etat.” Rather than fall into the trap of dismissing Wolf and others as crackpots and crazies, Klein conducts an investigation of their preoccupations and public appeal.

Confusing Klein with Naomi Campbell is much less excusable, but makes for a great story. A prominent contact of Klein admitted to her that he responded to her correspondence because he thought it came from Campbell, an African-American supermodel who is active in the areas of social justice, human rights, and global philanthropy. Campbell is considered a liberal but does not align with a single political party. She interacted with Donald Trump to secure help for her philanthropic causes, but later publicly criticized Trump’s policies and political campaigns.

Klein suggests that the rise of an on-line underworld of conspiracies and misinformation has inadvertently been fueled by political progressives. Comparing liberals with anti-vaxxers, Klein writes: “We defined ourselves against each other and yet were somehow becoming ever more alike, willing to declare each other non-people. … When entire categories of people are reduced to their race and gender and labeled ‘privileged,’ there is little room to confront the myriad ways that working-class white men and women are abused under our predatory capitalist order, with left-wing movements losing many opportunities for alliances.” This degree of self-criticism is quite refreshing in today’s America.

Klein goes on to make her biggest take-away point that the left’s exiling or alienating people pushes them toward the far-right, which accepts them with open arms and offers them forums & sympathy. This journey into environmental activism challenges the view of rivers as mere property, arguing that rivers have consciousness and inherent rights. With this view, rivers are our living ancestors, not just inanimate resources. A key take-away is that we must adopt a “grammar of animacy” to overcome the human-centric destruction of waterways that are vital participants in our planet’s survival. Macfarlane’s rejection of the modern mechanistic world view (rationalism) aligns with indigenous knowledge systems and legal frameworks that grant rivers inherent rights to flourish, persist, and flow unobstructed.

The philosophy that nature is conscious is known as panpsychism. Related concepts include animism and cosmopsychism. The opposite of panpsychism, that views consciousness as fundamental, is materialism, which is based on the primacy of matter and its role in creating consciousness. Physicalism is broader than materialism, because it also includes energy, space, time, and physical laws in its theory that everything is physical. Its opposite is dualism.

The term panpsychism was coined in the 16th century by Italian philosopher Francesco Patrizi, but the idea has its roots in the animism of early Greek philosophers like Thales of Miletus, who lived in the 6th century BCE. Animism actually has pre-historic origins in the Paleolithic hunter-gatherer societies that considered the natural world as a network of living, conscious entities, rather than as dead matter.

As I was listening to this audiobook, I was constantly thinking of the current status of the (no longer) mighty Colorado River. Our ancestors, ignoring the obvious fact that a river changes over time, allocated too much of its water to seven different states, including my home state of California, based on data from some of the wettest years on record. The prolonged drought we are experiencing today has led to Lake Powell and Lake Mead, two huge reservoirs along the river, to become severely depleted, creating a major threat to the well-being of the states whose livelihoods depend on the river. ...more

Iran’s ancient Jewish community was apprehensive about a revolution that was driven by anti-Semitic mullahs and leftists, But Guita’s search for social justice and her newfound spiritual vision placed her onto a path that impacted her relationship with her faith, family, and country. Immersed in her idealistic goals for transforming her homeland, Guita navigated the delicate balance between two spiritual identities, each pulling at her sense of self and belonging.

The story of Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution has been told in many memoirs, historical fictions, and actual histories. It is amazing how the same set of events can be viewed so differently by diverse observers. Sazan is more sympathetic than most toward the revolutionary period’s events and personalities, including Ayatollah Khomeini, with whom she had an encounter. Her idealism blinded her to certain hypocrisies and inconsistencies of the revolutionaries and their worldviews. Her mother eventually succeeded in making her recognize the distortions in her views, using behavioral psychology and other means.

Nevertheless, Sazan’s account does offer a glimpse into a life lived on the fault line between two worlds, where the quest for purpose and belonging transcends the boundaries of tradition and faith. Many Iranians experienced the same dilemmas just prior to the Shah’s exile and immediately after the transition. Some got stuck in the revolutionary fervor and kept hoping that hardships and injustices would resolve themselves. Others soured on the Revolution and those who took and consolidated power after a show referendum for a poorly-defined Islamic government.
