The best way to describe this remarkable life story and the author’s motives to write it is to quote a couple of paragraphs from the very beginning of the book and a few sentences from the end of its 1.5-page Afterword. So, here we go.

“Many women are mothers. Some mothers have five children. Some mothers have five children and work full-time. Very few mothers of five children work clandestinely as Central Intelligence Agency operations officers, spending countless hours in unpredictable and often dangerous environments with their families overseas. This I know to be true. This is my story.”

“It is a story about the intersection of marriage and parenting with a unique and challenging career. It is a look at my life and how I navigated the joys and heartaches, the thrills and letdowns, and the constant demands of being a wife, a mother to my five children, and a CIA spy.”

I particularly liked Chapter 14, “On the Street,” which begins with the author pointing to the irony of trying to raise children with the proper morals, capable of telling right from wrong, and believing in the importance of always telling the truth, while being engaged in a professional life that required lying as a matter of course. A revelation (for me) in Chapter 16, “9/11 Attacks,” was learning that the CIA office in Europe, where the author worked, was already preparing for “an impending war in Iraq”; so, it seems, that the invasion of Iraq didn’t occur as a reaction to 9/11 but was in planning stages before the terrorist attacks. ...more

In this well-written book, writer and political theorist Laura K. Field presents the results of a detailed analytical study of the academics, intellectuals (many with PhDs), and influencers providing the ideological backbone to the American far-right and Trumpism. Donald Trump himself isn’t a thinker, but his 2016 presidential victory presented a grand opportunity for people who aspired to implement a radicalization and reconfiguration of the American conservative movement. The result was the rise of an illiberal New Right, moving beyond the popular MAGA movement to examine the ideas challenging liberal democracy.

Field identifies overlapping camps within this New Right movement, which form a patchwork movement encompassing different, sometimes contradictory, set of ideologies. The three main camps are:

- The Claremont Institute/Straussians, heirs to Harry Jaffa, who emphasize a specific, often confrontational view of the American founding and political power.

- Post-liberals, who advocate for using executive power to enforce a religiously inspired (often Catholic) "common good," rejecting traditional individual rights.

- National Conservatives, whose focus is on nation-states built on culturally homogenous foundations (white, male, Christian).

Three key takeaways of the study are:

Both authors have known the bitterness of righteous anger, yet they chose to transcend the anger and view themselves as brothers with many common interests.

Abu Sarah & Inon take the readers on a weeklong journey across the sacred and bloodstained land known as Israel/Palestine, in the hopes of showing that compassion and unity can pull humanity back from the precipice of blind anger. Their hopeful, honest, and unapologetic narrative sends the message that people have the power to make changes and that peace is not only possible, but inevitable: For Israelis, for Palestinians, and for the world that will be inspired by their example.

Key themes of the book include friendship & resistance (to the endless cycle of violence), the power of dialogue, and a focus on the future, rather than obsessing over the insurmountable obstacles of the past. This book covers ~500 years of this history, beginning with the Ottomans conquering Damascus in 1516, some nine centuries after the dawn of Islam. The fall of Damascus was followed in short order by the capture of Cairo, another major center of Arab culture.

The 3.5-century Ottoman domination was followed by a period of European colonialism and, later, American & Russian influence. During the latter two periods of domination, first Arab Nationalism, represented by Egypt's Kamal Abdul Nasir arose to combat external forces; then focus shifted to Islam as a unifying force. According to Rogan, in any free and fair election in much of the Arab world, "Islamists would win hands-down.” Of course, Rogan issued this verdict before Islamists totally discredited themselves by producing entities such as Al Qaeda & Islamic State and by ruining the cultures and economies of multiple countries, while secular forces produced thriving states in the Persian Gulf region.

Rogan records his tale with both a wide-angle lens showing the big picture and with a zoom-lens that focuses on individual experiences, such as those of a bath worker in Damascus, an Egyptian girl who was an activist during the the Arab spring, and a pirate who became the chief naval officer of the Ottomans.

The weakening of the Ottoman empire, caused in part by advancing forcers from Europe & Russia and internal rot, led to local rulers asserting independence and operating more or less without taking orders from the Ottomans. In both Palestine and Egypt, prominent families asserted their powers. In the Arabian peninsula the al-Saud family made multiple attempts to assume power, succeeding in the third try. As Ottomans' power waned, Napoleon attacked Egypt in 1798 and the British later kicked the French out. Muhammad Ali Pasha began to modernize Egypt and to assert its independence. This modernization period of ~40 years produced economic havoc by increasing national debt. Even the Suez Canal, which was supposed to overhaul Egypt’s economy, turned out to be a financial disaster.

A byproduct of events above was increased tensions between Christians and Muslims in Lebanon. The Europeans' influence rose steadily through infrastructure projects, loans, and other economic levers. Then came World War I, which put the final nail in Ottomans' coffin. The Europeans promised sovereignty and control or national leadership positions to several people, in return for their cooperation in getting rid of the Ottomans. Then came the Balfour Declaration and the establishment of the state of Israel, which immensely complicated the problems.

In the period between the two World Wars, several major developments occurred. Hitler came to power in Europe, Ata Turk in Turkey, and Reza Shah in Iran. Then during the Cold War, the US and Soviet Union took control of the affairs of the Middle East. The Arab lands became a playground for the game of power and influence. When the Cold War ended, the vacuum was filled by a number of middle powers: Turkey, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and of course Israel. The Arab world's center of gravity is no longer in Damascus or Cairo, but in Riyadh and other major cities of the Persian Gulf region.

The US still has many military bases in the Arab world and also exerts influence in the Middle East through Israel. Russia is trying to get what it can, by supporting Iraq and, later, Syria, after its unsuccessful campaign in Afghanistan. As I write this review, two wars against Iran have been waged jointly by Israel and the US, creating much instability in the region and economic ripple effects worldwide. The fourth version of the Arab world's identity (after the Ottoman Turks, colonialism-induced Arab Nationalism, and American/USSR/Russian-triggered Islamic unity) is yet to be written. ...more

What’s new here is that the book/film does not depict loneliness in space but a genuine connection between a human and an alien life form that looks completely different from what we are used to see in other sci-fi space tales. The author dedicates his book to John, Paul, George, and Ringo.

The story begins with the protagonist, Ryland Grace, stretched on a bed, being handled by a robotic arm and asked simple questions by a computer. As he gradually regains his senses, he starts wondering about his whereabouts and how he got into this lab-like environment. He doesn’t remember his name or what he did for a living. Eventually, he remembers enough physics and finds a measuring tape and a stopwatch, which he uses to determine that the force of gravity at his current location is 1.5 times that of Earth. “I’m not on Earth,” he says to himself.

Software-engineer-turned-sci-fi-writer Andy Weir concocts a tale in which Astrophage, a space-faring, single-celled organism that feeds on stellar energy, is dimming the Sun and other stars, with only one exception. So, an interstellar mission is sent to determine whether a fast-approaching ice age, with certain extinction within 30 years, can be avoided. At least one alien civilization is also investigating, which leads to an inter-species cooperation toward the shared goal.

A main theme of the story is a friendship between Grace and a rock-like alien engineer, which he nicknames “Rocky.” Though quite different from Grace (it has an octopus-like appearance with 5 arms, no vision, and communicating via sounds & musical notes), Rocky helps with the discovery that a nearby planet is home to Taumoeba, an organism that preys on Astrophage. The scientist-engineer team then uses selective breeding to produce Taumoeba that can survive on both Venus and Rocky’s environs. The ending, which entails the saving of the universe from doomsday, offers several twists and turns that lead to an unexpected final outcome for Grace. ...more
