David Pilling was born in Manchester, England, and entered the textile industry at the tender age of sixteen. His family migrated to Australia in 1963 and David worked for Actil in Adelaide for eight years, with involvement in the areas of quality control, industrial engineering and financial development planning. He moved to Melbourne in 1971 to become Operations Director of a medium sized textile company, with increasing responsibilities for marketing and selling. In 1984, he returned to Adelaide and became Design and Development Director of Actil, frequently performing the duties of the Marketing Director.
