“The next morning, the twin mountains shine in the distance. The girls clomp along a stretch of lush grassland.

Out of nowhere, five Steppe Riders thunder into pursuit.

Facing backward, Altan wields her sling. THWAP-THWAP-THWAP-THWAP-THWAP—every shot finds a rider.

GROANS echo off the rocks.

One man tumbles off his horse, unconscious.

SSSSSHOOT, SSSSSHOOT—arrows whip past the girls’ heads.

Kengi screams, “Switch!”

They lock arms and reverse positions front to back. Kengi grabs her bow—SSSSSHOOT, SSSSSHOOT, SSSSSHOOT. Her first arrows miss the riders. A return arrow grazes her ear and cheek. Furious, she fires again—kills a man with a clean shot to the heart.

Three riders bear down. SSSSSHOOT, SSSSSHOOT, SSSSSHOOT.

Altan prays, “Father save us!” Then, she hugs low to the mare’s neck—Kengi flattens herself on the rump as well. Arrows miss them flying overhead.

Kengi pops up and lets loose another arrow—a fatal neck shot, blood spraying everywhere.

Two riders remain, reloading.

Kengi strains her bow sideways—SSSSSHOOT—hits the second rider in the shoulder. He slumps forward and rides off.

The last rider closes in, arrow drawn on Kengi.

Altan tosses Chakha off the horse with a whooping WHISTLE. Kengi WHISTLES as well.

Chakha zigzags on the ground. Shizir mirrors her above the rider’s head. Distracted, the rider aims at the eagle—his horse trips and crashes. Chakha disappears underfoot.”
